Destiny: The Taken King Should Have a "Founder's" Edition

Opinion: It would be a gesture of good faith to long-term players.

I've spent $100 on Destiny content, and I'm planning to pay $40 more when the next expansion, The Taken King, launches in September. I've played the game since the day it came out, and I've loved my time with it.

In general, I have no problem spending a little more money on a game to get more content. The DLC model has become ubiquitous in games, and titles such as Batman: Arkham Knight, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, and Evolve all got substantial post-release additions.

However, this upcoming Destiny expansion poses a unique situation. When Bungie announced The Taken King at E3, players were generally excited about the upcoming additions to the game. The developer then announced a couple special editions for the expansion, including a collector's edition with exclusive in-game items. The problem is, the $80 Taken King Collector's Edition bundles the base game and all three expansions. In other words, if you're already a dedicated Destiny player and you want all of the in-game items, you have to buy the game and the prior expansions again.

Developer Bungie's decision to split content among the different editions has sparked controversy on the internet, with long-term players angered that the developer expects them to shell out so much money for a few emotes and some shaders. The studio has said that loyal users will get some unique gear, and Bungie's community manager Deej promised, "Year-one players won't get the same perks as people who buy a collector's edition. They’ll get something better." But the dedicated fanbase should not have to face this decision. Destiny's most loyal players should get both the collector's edition perks and something more.

That's why Bungie should release a "Founder's Edition" of The Taken King. The developer has already announced a "Founder's Pack" with one shader, a sparrow, and an emblem, but that's really not enough for players who have paid full price and stuck with the game since its beginning. The Founder's Edition would let Bungie recognize loyal players more meaningfully than just letting them have an emblem and still expecting them to pay full price for the expansion.

My proposed Destiny: The Taken King Founder's Edition ($50):

  • The Taken King Expansion
  • Founder's Pack (already announced) with a sparrow, armor shader, and Year One emblem
  • Collector's Edition in-game content (already announced) including the class-specific items, emotes, and shaders
  • Founder's Weapon (proposed) with an exclusive legendary/exotic weapon
  • Founder's Armor (proposed) with an exclusive legendary piece of armor
  • Founder's Ship (proposed) with an exclusive ship
  • Founder's Emote (proposed) with an exclusive emote

This Founder's Edition would be available for purchase by players who've reached a certain level by the expansion's release. Such an edition would demonstrate to the community that Bungie does recognize the players who have dedicated themselves to the game.

Bungie's decision isn't new. Publishers have, for years, made some content exclusive to different versions of the games. For example, Watch Dogs infamously launched with a handful of separate, retailer-specific editions that all had unique items. What makes Destiny's situation feel egregious and noteworthy, is that it seems to prioritize enticing new players while simply expecting old players to keep paying full price for the game. For just $80, you can get the base game and all of the expansions, in addition to real-world objects and those exclusive emotes. If you don't care about all those extras, it only costs $60 to buy the entire Destiny experience.

No Caption Provided

But I will have spent $140 on Destiny when The Taken King launches. I will have played well over one hundred hours, and many others will have clocked countless more than me. We have played the game since its release, loving it for what it does but believing in its potential to grow. These players have kept the community alive and rabidly consumed all new content that's come to the game.

We don't deserve anything. I recognize that I am asking for Bungie to take time developing additional content as a reward for legacy players. I'm not going to stop playing, either, but I want to feel like I, and other loyal players, are as appreciated as newcomers. It would be a gesture of good faith for Bungie to at least make that Collector's Edition content available for legacy players for a slight premium. The dedicated fanbase passionately pursues any hint of a new shader or ship. It's not good for the company or the community for those items to be locked away from the players who want them most.

Bungie's nod to long-term players currently consists of an emblem and the promise of some other items. However, Bungie is not planning on giving those players the collector's edition content, and it still expects them to pay full price for the expansion. While the faithful will continue to buy additional content on the day of release for a time, eventually they will tire of the lack of recognition. A Founder's Edition would go a long way to keeping long-term players satisfied with having bought Destiny and its expansions on day one.

Why do people feel entitled to a reward for playing a game? "I've been playing your game for a whole year now. I think I deserve a reward for that." How about an in game achievement telling you how great you are for spending lots of time playing a videogame?

I don't think they care anymore, a ton of players have left this game to go play something where the developers actually try and fix glitches and not penny pinch every chance they get.

You forgot to ask for "Dedicated Server's" I have no problems with buying any expansion because I wont spend another penny until Bungie fixes their servers! ... This is worse than BF4 was when it first released.

@ramtracker42: It was only rough for a week and the game has worked flawlessly since it was fixed, why would we need dedicated servers?

Destiny players who have logged on before 12/30/2014 should get WAYY more extra content, gestures, shaders, sparrows, ships, and that's just cosmetics.

You should be able to differentiate a Year One player, from someone who just got the game just by looking at their armor, or maybe changing the color of their name above their head? Maybe a crown emblem or something...but the fact that there is NOTHING at all for the players, nothing for destiny fans who have grinded their way into oblivion...that's just a low blow to loyal fans.

Bungie, if you want to keep your game populated, you may want to show some damn gratitude to your community...or maybe 'gratitude' is something that bungie doesn't practice.

Anyone else think that Destiny is a AAA answer to free to play? Even with the endless grinding and weak narrative seems to be successful and makes money despite criticism. unsure if its a good or bad thing long term but hats off they've done something different.

How about a founders discount for the expansion, given all newcomers can get everything for $80, how about offering the expansion for $25 to those that bought within the first few months!

"We've been playing since day 1, so we deserve more!" I'm sorry kiddies, but that's the very definition of entitlement. If anything, they shouldn't have introduced any kind of bonus content, just the collection version for $60 and the expansion for those who only need to buy that.

Founder's edition.....Taken King Expansion....Extra gear or weapons.....Just more ways for Bungie to get more money out of creating a game thst is fun when you play through the missions but gets so incredibly boring while playing the same strikes over and over again. Ive done the same bonties so many times ive lost count of how many similar missions ive done. Take that money and buy a game thats worth it like The Witcher 3 or wait for Fallout 4 or The Division. Destiny died a long time ago.

I bought the game day one at full price and bought the season pass that same day. With that said I honestly want this game to die so they can realize that this business model of empty promises and nickle and diming your customers should not be tolerated. Destiny has great mechanics and game play and the HoW did flesh out the story some. But the content is way to over prices for the amount of actual content you receive. I know people will say they spent 1000 game hours in the game, and so did I. That why I know I can say with confidence the content was not worth the price. Destiny lives off of repetitiveness and tedium. The only thing that makes the grind bearable is friends if you're a PVE person, and Crucible if you're a PVP person. But for days on end you do the same bounties, weeks on end you do the same Raids/Nightfalls/Weeklies and when all that is finished you grind the Vanguard play list or Crucible/Iron Banner. When is the last PVE event they had? The Queen's Wrath? And twice a month you have the same PVP events with Iron Banner and Trails of Osiris. I started playing Warframe seriously in December 2014 and experience 5 completely different events and not including the various upgrades to the game. I played many other MMOs that had way more event variety with in the same amount of time. And not just MMOs, either. Dragon Age Multiplayer has a event every weekend. Small but it adds a little something to the tedium.

Despite everything I still pop it in once in a blue moon around updates to see the changes but it may soon just get sold if us day one players are being forced to beg for our loyalty to be rewarded, or even truly acknowledged. I just keep hoping they would change their ways.

I really hope they do something more than they're offering. I feel like players that have stuck with it since the beginning should get a good discount on the inevitable 2nd season pass that will appear after The Taken King.

Why do people keep saying "we don't deserve anything", or "they don't owe us anything", THEY DO, we've spent hours on this game, helping them fix their hundred issues that some testing could have avoided, over a million hours from all players, payed for the game, the DLC, and some already for an expansion, so guess what, they sure as hell owe us something, specially since we payed for the game, that happens to be the same thing every day, PoE is now repeating bosses, with the same mechanics, so 6 weeks in and already the content is old. Stop just thinking the game is enough, if it was it would have a begging, middle and end, it doesn't, it's not over and we've invested a lot, considering there are other titles out there, cheaper and in many ways better than Destiny.Stop lying down and waiting to be stepped on, stand up already, we didn't let shit like this pass over our heads 2 decades ago, why the hell should we let it now.

FFXIV has legacy stuff for us who played it before the Realm got Reborn. Destiny wasn't quite that bad but some continue to play it despite the trolls and haters who have sh*t on the game since it's launch. Like you said they aren't obligated to give us anything more than the game but it would be nice.

No, this game just needs to die. They've already defaulted on $100 of promised content. Bungievision will not see another penny of my gaming budget. Maybe if the Founders Edition was free I would at least look at the "improvements"... along with the HoW content I bought on pre-order and never even looked at.

@NTenseify: Why is there always some douche that has to say people are crying when they call someone out on something #@$%ed up. Believe or not, people still play and enjoy the game, and the pricing model for this expansion is designed specifically to screw over the most loyal players. You think that's cool?

@ducusss: So you are loyal to something that is screwing you over? Are you some kind of masochist? Might be time to stop throwing your money at them if you feel you are getting screwed over. But my point was, crying over some emotes, it's laughable that some people will actually buy the whole bundle pack again and Bungie know this, that's why they get away with it

And how am I loyal if calling out Bungie/Activision on their terrible pricing and plans to wring out every penny of the people who still enjoy the game? I don't plan to get this thing, but it's still wrong that it exists. And you need to get your head out of your ass.

Solution: Lower the price of the Standard DLC upgrade to $30. Sell the proposed TTK's Founder's edition for $40 with a new ghost shell voiced by Mila Kunis to make up for Dinklebot & I'm sold.

solution, give the taken king for free to thoose who have already payed 100, they are selling the base edition for 60, thats how much the game cost, plus the 2 expansions 35 to 40, and we had to deal with all the bugs,
isn't this one of the largest grossing games of all time,
500million dollar budget wasted and paying for the immigrant song on advertisenments,

The founders pack was just a stupid idea, not the idea presented in this one, but the idea that we would get a shader, emblem, and sparrow, for paying 80 dollars more then everyone else,

LOL. Given that Destiny's very design is to milk users for money, why would anyone be shocked by this, or the guy's arrogance in his statements? He's right. A good portion of their players would throw money at the screen for emotes, and he knows it.

This is the most blatant insult anyone could give, hidden in a politically correct manner, but it's an insult all the same. In this case however, the shoes fits. They should package this expansion with a pair of toy udders to keep the milking going.

Destiny. LOL. What a joke.

I guess it depends on whether you believe them when they say they're going to give founders something better; or regardless of how much better it is, you still want the other stuff. You've made this proposal without an important piece of pertinent information: what they plan to do for founders.

What a stupid article. Instead of questioning the many versions that Bungie is going to release for their next "DLC". "Alex" of GS suggest adding another version to the fold to take our money. Really. How much is Bungie paying GS!?

Can the founders edition at least explain why it doesn't have time to explain?

Also, "The Taken King" should clearly be changed to "The Taken Piss", based on that interview.

What the hell happened to Bungie?!?! How can they go from making one of the greatest shooter franchises ever made down to a level of sheer arrogance that rivals EA in terms of the goal to swindle people left and right?

Heck, you could say that accounts for a majority of what they've done with Destiny from the offset; no trading so people will keep spending money on microtransactions, RNG loot that punishes rather than rewards skilled players, keeping story elements back for DLC purposes, poor value in The Dark Below expansion and now this rubbish about the collectors edition, The Taken King and its ridiculous price point.

I hate to say this, but it really does feel like Bungie doesn't care one bit about their fans anymore. And if they don't care, why should we?

There are no microtransactions, the RNG is weighted in the PvP towards the top ranked players in a match, and the DLC stories (such as they are) are totally separate from the main game's story (such as it is). The Dark Below was light on content, but nobody needed to buy it and everybody knew what was in it before it launched, and we don't actually know how much content The Taken King represents right now.

@Mogan: "The Dark Below was light on content, but nobody needed to buy it" Umm, yes they did. This whole game is designed in such a way that you need to buy every piece of dlc to keep playing. Sure, you technically don't HAVE to buy it but, if you don't, you will be missing a large part of the game and may as well give it up altogether as you will be wasting your time and be locked out of many events.

@bdrtfm: That's like saying you have to buy sequels because otherwise you'll be missing a large part of the series. Yeah, if you want to play every little bit of Destiny you'll have to buy every little bit that's released for sale. If you don't like the look of The Dark Below, you can just leapfrog it's content and level cap by just buying the most current DLC.

And you aren't locked out of any activities that you already had access to; the end game vendor gear gets replaced for everybody so you can boost your level whether you have the DLC or not. The only things you can do are the new activities added in the expansion. At worst you'll miss a few weeklies and dailies when the new strikes and missions come up in the rotation.
