Dark Souls sequel in question

From Software creative director Hidetaka Miyazaki apologizes for "technical difficulties" in last year's role-playing game, says not sure if studio will make another title in universe.

The existence of technical issues in a game as large as Dark Souls comes as little surprise, but for developer From Software, these headaches might prevent a sequel from seeing the light of day.

Gamers might not get another game from the Dark Souls universe to die a horrific death in.
Gamers might not get another game from the Dark Souls universe to die a horrific death in.

In an interview with Edge, From Software creative director Hidetaka Miyazaki admitted there were numerous bugs in Dark Souls, and apologized to fans for this.

"Yes, there were technical difficulties," he said. "I don't believe that it's okay to have them, but realistically speaking, it was quite a large-scale game--even in terms of budget and expectations. So we're very sorry for the trouble we've caused by our processing errors and bugs from Japan."

When asked about the likelihood of From Software creating another game in the Dark Souls universe, Miyazaki said he's not sure it will happen, or if fans will forgive the studio for previous technical issues.

"We don't even know if we'll have another chance," he said. "We have the confidence that we can improve from our mistakes this time and create an even better Dark world, but we don't know if the users will forgive us for the mistakes, so I cannot give an exact answer."

Technical issues do not spell doom for all large-scale games. The Fallout series, a franchise notorious for its widespread and sometimes comical bugs, has spawned numerous sequels despite these issues.

Dark Souls was released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in October to a glowing critical reception. It went on to ship more than 1.5 million units worldwide and was October's sixth-best-selling title.

Okay, You know what? People lets say " It was not that bad, we are sorry for complaining, and please make another one" Also it was not that bad and they did fix some of the bugs on the last patch.

Blightown was the worst of it and the online concept was good with the factions and such but the overall PvP didn't work quite as well as its predecessor. Still my favorite game of 2011 and it would be a shame if we didn't get at least one more go with the learnings from Dark Souls, it would be the most epic game ever.

There were barely any bugs in Dark Souls compared to most games. I hardly noticed. I don't want to think about the possibility of them not producing a sequel. DS was easily my favorite game this year (and there were a ton of good games). If they think the reaction was bad to the bugs, wait until the sh*tstorm hits if they don't develop a sequel.

From Software is pretty passionate about their games. The framerate was a small problem, but i quickly got over it, it was only bad in blightown. This also doesnt seem like a marketing thing, since they make games for their fans, if they wanted to make tons of money, they would just turn it into call of souls and release 15 $ dlc every month. The souls series is awesome and will soon be classics.

@Gelugon_baat The fact you only quote some parts of a post shows you have no answer for another part of it, then you try and change the direction of the argument. You're very childish.

I don't know if by "hoping fans will forgive us for our technical mistakes" is the japanese way of saying "we have to make X return on this game or we don't get to make a sequel" or what, but in any case: MAKE ANOTHER GAME. I'LL BUY IT.

Maybe some of you haven't noticed that my first post here mentioned that I find game-makers who beat themselves up silly over their mistakes very refreshing

I hope they make another game, I played dark souls from start to finish and rarely had problems with bugs, the only big issue i had was the frame rate going crazy in certain locations besides that i loved this game.

I've yet to play Demon Souls. Still enjoying Dark Souls. About the mistakes that they are apologizing for, forgiven. The game is a tad close to a masterpiece as it is.

This game would have had much better performance if the developer wouldn't have had to program for the lowest common denominator (over priced internet ready blu ray player ps3.) If they could have concentrated on the SUPERIOR hardware of the true gaming machine Xbox 360 it would have had awesome performance. Oh well. As per usual it got gimped because of the INFERIORITY of the over priced internet ready blu ray player hardware. But it's still a great game and I hope they make another. This time exclusive to the SUPERIOR Xbox 360 so they won't have to hold back due to the pathetic ps3's inability to keep up. "Xbox 360 is the BEST console EVER made." --John Carmack

So far I I can say with the game, the only really big issue was Blight Town's HORRID frame rate. The rest of the game was fine. oO And as for the Mist Ring, well, that sword cuts both ways. Hate it when you don't have it, love it to death when you do. XD What I want is leveled weapons so lowbie toons can't get carried to epic tier stuff then troll about other low levels wearing gear from the end game.

This is dissapointing news! I really found no glaring bugs on Dark souls, (just completed it yesterday :D). There's some frame rate issues at some point but thats about it. It's one of my favourite games of all time, alongside Demon souls, I really hope they carry on making games of this quality. You start to lose hope in the game industry when you see the rehashed 1st person shooters, but games like this and Skyrim give me renewed hope!

Wow, it's actually really cool to hear a creative director take so much responsibility! I really liked Dark Souls and would love another one. My respect for these guys just went up! :) I wish more developers/publishers acted like that - as long as the bugs get fixed and the games get better, its all good!

I personally thought the only problem with Dark Souls was that it tried to do a little too much for the engine to handle in some areas (I'm looking at you, Blighttown). Perhaps From should aim towards the next Souls game being for the next gen of consoles so there's a little more grunt to play with. Oh, but cut out that Mist Ring rubbish.

Dear Mr Miyazaki, I speak on behalf of the worldwide gaming community when i say that you, nor anyone from From Software, need apologise for the minor bugs in this game. Such minor bugs should certainly not prevent the release of a sequel. We thank you for the best game of 2011 and sincerley look forward to a much anticipated sequel. Yours faithfully Worldwide Gaming Community

The sad thing is a developer apologizing for having some bugs at launch is now uncommon...not because it's uncommon for a game to have bugs but because so many of them are using gamers as their QA dept and shipping the game with known issues.

@Hodge996 If small glitches like the ones in Dark Souls require a formal apology then I guess that the developers at Bethesda would have to commit seppuku after each game they release.

@coltACP I agree with you there. I put it down to it not being as Claustrophobic. Losing some of the dark (no pun intended) tension. Still I think they are both epic games.

@ Jbul Sir, could not have put it better myself! A couple of relatively small glitches and we get a formal apology..... You listening Bethesda?! "This is definitely a Japanese perspective. Honor is a big part of their culture, so they feel bad about releasing an imperfect game, and wants fans' forgiveness. This is amazing. Todd Howard and Bethesda could learn a lot from this shocking display of humility."

technical difficulties? it had framerate issues, but that isn't suprising considering Demon's souls had the same issues. The bugs didn't bother me much, however i feel soemthing was lost between Dark Souls and demon's souls, i find myself playign demon's souls more as a result and prefer it to the sequel.

What?! I don't understand.... I didn't notice ANY game flaws or technical difficulties. The only thing that was annoying, was/is in the Depths(?), the place where those goons spat poisonous darts, where the game got a bit choppy at times. I believe this game was pretty close to perfect, and I would LOVE to see another game within the Dark Souls-universe.

@Gelugon_baat What the hell is your problem? Software have made two games that are not only challenging, but immensely fun at the same time. People on here post genuine opinions, while you attack them with bullsh!t remarks about funding the company. A: Your supporting any company you buy games from and B: I'd rather my money went to a company like these that try something different, instead of your bog standard game of normality like CoD... If your not a fan why are you even on this article?

@ franzito Dark & Demon's Souls are two of my favourite games of all time and I don't think it's "consumerism" for me to want more. Dark Souls wasn't a sequel to Demon's Souls but had the same look and feel - I think there's plenty of room for another game or two of the same ilk.

@ bhyesilnil You're right the dead bodies are unrealistic in that respect but consider the alternatives - they explode (which would be ridiculous) or they are solid and heavy, which could result in bigger creatures blocking doorways or paths etc. Realistic but not conducive to smooth gameplay! the only issue I have is the occasional frame rate issue.

@Gelugon Why are you trolling the comment's section and pulling apart everyone's opinions? You're not going to change how people feel by acting like a jerk and your words hold no weight when you speak to others in such a condescending manner. And by the way, I hope From Software does reward us with more games that we "have to buy". I'd gladly pay for another game with the same quality and replay value of Dark Souls. If you feel otherwise, good for you, I have no problems with the fact that you have your own opinion on the matter and you are welcome to avoid whatever game you feel isn't worth your time. Now maybe it's time to step back and let other people have their own opinions as well, because right now you are being very disrespectful.

@Gelugon_baat Name a game that is perfect then. I'm a fan of the games because they are great, its not fanboyism. For example, I'm a big fan of the old FF games, but the new games suck, thus I won't buy them. If you cant enjoy something because it has a very little amount of minor flaws, I feel sorry for you, because I don't think you could like any game if that is the case.

Hilarious, this seems like some ridiculous publicity stunt. The game sold a respectable amount and the media & vast majority of players praised the title. Oh, and lets not forget the recent petition by PC owners (Including myself) who want the title on PC. I play It on PS3 but would definitely purchase an enhanced version on PC. I highly doubt that this franchise, will be put to rest yet. If anything there could be a new world environment etc but the game play elements that this franchise established will surely live on.

I would buy another sequel for sure! Demon's Souls was great, and I think in many aspects that Darks Souls is even better. The only complaints I had were the framerate drops in certain areas and the online component that wasn't as good as in Demon's Souls. But then again, the singleplayer was awesome! Good job From Software!

The game is great, one of the best I've played this generation, yeah it had some frame rate drops in Blighttown, but it's only 1 location out of 20, and it wasn't even that bad. There were some other minor bugs but they were fixed really fast with patches. So don't take it so hard, the game is epic and we know you tried really hard building that huge world ;). I read sometime ago, there could be a DLC for Dark Souls (a new arena and boss), I hope it's true, it would be one of the few DLCs I would actually buy.

@Gelugon_baat A franchise must earn fans in the first place, and the Soul's games have certainly earned their fans loyalty. Nothing is 100% perfect, but when a franchise continues to make top quality products, fans will forgive *minor* imperfections.

I think he's being very harsh on himself. I hardly saw any bugs in the game -and believe me I've played some stinkers that are riddled in bugs. But it just shows why the games are so good, if he thought that Dark Souls could have been even better. I Really hope they do another Souls title, because the first two are up there as my best games ever played.

"We don't even know if we'll have another chance," he said. "We have the confidence that we can improve from our mistakes this time and create an even better Dark world, but we don't know if the users will forgive us for the mistakes, so I cannot give an exact answer." What? Why should the devs need forgiveness for giving us such an awesome, epic game? The mere thought is absurd! Although I appreciate the sentiment that these guys want to give us a top quality product, they should feel proud of what they've achieved. I mean, there are few games I've played through multiple times because it was so absorbing. Dark Souls is one of those games and easily my favorite game from last year (above Skyrim and Arkham City, etc). The few flaws it had were blown clean out of the water by the overall quality of the game, so much so that they were worth ignoring. Lol. Please give us more!!!!! Even if it's a different setting, if the gameplay is as epic as Dark Souls, I will buy it, I will play it and I will love it.
