Dark Souls sequel in question

From Software creative director Hidetaka Miyazaki apologizes for "technical difficulties" in last year's role-playing game, says not sure if studio will make another title in universe.

The existence of technical issues in a game as large as Dark Souls comes as little surprise, but for developer From Software, these headaches might prevent a sequel from seeing the light of day.

Gamers might not get another game from the Dark Souls universe to die a horrific death in.
Gamers might not get another game from the Dark Souls universe to die a horrific death in.

In an interview with Edge, From Software creative director Hidetaka Miyazaki admitted there were numerous bugs in Dark Souls, and apologized to fans for this.

"Yes, there were technical difficulties," he said. "I don't believe that it's okay to have them, but realistically speaking, it was quite a large-scale game--even in terms of budget and expectations. So we're very sorry for the trouble we've caused by our processing errors and bugs from Japan."

When asked about the likelihood of From Software creating another game in the Dark Souls universe, Miyazaki said he's not sure it will happen, or if fans will forgive the studio for previous technical issues.

"We don't even know if we'll have another chance," he said. "We have the confidence that we can improve from our mistakes this time and create an even better Dark world, but we don't know if the users will forgive us for the mistakes, so I cannot give an exact answer."

Technical issues do not spell doom for all large-scale games. The Fallout series, a franchise notorious for its widespread and sometimes comical bugs, has spawned numerous sequels despite these issues.

Dark Souls was released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in October to a glowing critical reception. It went on to ship more than 1.5 million units worldwide and was October's sixth-best-selling title.

@DreamorDie My thoughts exactly. It would be an absolute travesty! There's a reason Demon Souls and Dark Souls recieved so much praise. They're original, unabashedly unique, and the studio deserves every opportunity to continue to reinvent and expand on the games that they have so lovingly created.

I doubt there would be a smile on your face when you don't get to enjoy a "quality" game and your frown will be so, so big complaining about a "not-so-quality" game that you wasted the money that you made on. :P

Hey, I got no problem here - you can go ahead and spend all that money you make then. Game-makers you!

From Software you better make us a sequel or "spiritual sequel" if you happen to switch publishers again. The bugs before the first patches were annoying, but you fixed every big problem for the most part. Blightown is the one big flaw that cannot be fixed it seems, but overall the game is still great and your fans would love for another sequel. If the technical flaws you mention are in regards to the online co-op and crappy matchmaking... well We know it was Namco's fault. There are other publishers...

the only "bug" i saw was the inclusion of blighttown, besides that the game is just peachy, please make another one, maybe have continuous coop in the next one so maybe me and a friend can die a million times together. I mean whats more fun than the most difficult game ever? experiencing the most difficult game ever with a friend.

@Rovelius Well, I find it good that you can say words like "mess" about aspects of a game that you like then - but of course you have to say things like "pure gem". You are little different from those people that focus more on the good things about a game, I say - if you haven't heard me saying this to you already. I doubt that everyone would see the single-player portion of the game the way you did - not least of which is From Software itself, who recently patched the game to make certain segments easier after people b****ed about how frustrating they are.

@Gelugon_baat lol no, I was just trying to see how what you said would apply to yourself. If you care about multiplayer and played Dark, you'd have a lot to bash :P Dark Souls' online was, and is still, being ruined by griefers who abuse a certain glitch to start new characters with endgame equipment. It's simply impossible to play online until you get much stronger. The singleplayer is perfect though since the glitches only affect multiplayer. Offline, the game is a pure gem. Online (early), it's an utter mess.

The only noticeable bug I recognized was the lag in New Londo Ruins going across the two thin bridges. Other than that, problems mainly said with online play nothing more. Miyazaki needs to reassert himself and realize Dark Souls is a world renown title and the true hardcore fans will always be craving more and more from From Software.

Miyazaki is being way WAY too hard on himself. The only glaring problem with the game was a lack of dedicated servers that made the multiplayer near useless. I didn't come across anything game breaking or or even particularly noticeable as far as bugs go in my 80+ hours with the game. When put against Skyrim, coming down on Dark Souls for bugs is laughable.

@MikeFlavaz Please do some research on the roles of a developer and publisher. And to make things worst, the article itself already tells you who the developer is.

I am not afraid about making people unhappy - especially die-hard fans of games who can't take a different opinion of the games and game-makers they love much.

And I ignore thumb tallies. I prefer written responses than lazy, lazy button clicks.

@XanderZane No, I died about a dozen times total on my first playthrough. I thought you would figure it out but since people are so stupid on this website, we have to tell them absolutely everything, hmm? Prepared or not, dodging and parrying are always there for you. You can beat the game at Lv 1. What seems to be out of most gamers' grasp is the fact Dark Souls is a SLOW game. You have to think every single action, move carefully, evaluate situations and strategize. It's not an action game. The players who will die are those who expect it to play like GOW or Bayonetta.

@Gelugon_baat So basically, if you play a game you like a lot, and stumble across a minor bug, you're gonna throw it away and blog on how crappy and sucky the game is? Explain this logic to me, please. I don't play Dark Souls out of fanboy-ism for FROM SOFTWARE, I play because I like the game. What's so complicated about that?

This game is one of the greatest ever made. No disrespect to Bandai, but Dark Souls is the only decent title they've ever made aside from maybe Tekken 10 years ago. Not making another or at least another spiritual successor if just foolish.

Wow?! Massive bugs? I've sunk almost 250hours of my life into Dark Souls and loved every single moment of it, ok so I noticed some minor flaws but nothing that would ever make not want a sequel. The studio doesn't need to apologise, there are some major main-stream titles out there absolutely riddled with massive glitches. For me the entire experience of Dark Souls was incredible, totally immersive and easily some of the best hack and slash combat I've ever had the fortune to play...Jeez, I sound like a right fanboy? Who cares, bring us Dark Souls 2, please!

Bethesda patched skyrim once. Dragons started flying backwards. From Software patched dark souls once, the dragon head glitch was removed. Miyazaki doesnt need to apologize. his game was more complete than many of the games out today. i am also thankful too that dark souls did NOT have that world/character tendency crap. the one thing i found to be bs in demons souls was taken out. and that was a step in the right direction.

Forgive them for what? Releasing two of the best and most atmoshperic games I've played in years? Sure, I've had some framerate issues here aand there, and the multiplayer aspect hasn't been working as well as it did in Demon's Souls, but Dark Souls is amazing.

The games are sublime masterpieces in their own right, both have only minor flaws which can be overlooked by their sheer quality and breadth. If this franchise dies this early, it would be an absolute travesty.

The way I see it, bugs in a series that gets released twice a year (not namin' any names here) or in a mediocre game is indeed a show-stopper. In games like Dark Souls or Skyrim, where the world is so ridiculously expansive though, I can easily overlook glitches in favor of the great play experience I'm afforded. What's a few bugs in a 100+ hour game, especially as long as the developers try to release a few patches to minimize the effects. As far as I'm concerned, the benefits far outweigh the bugs in cases like this. Don't let us down now, Miyazaki, keep 'em coming!

Totally forgiven. The glitches were quite minor, and aside from the frame-rate issues in a few areas, everything was quite manageable. These games are a breath of fresh air. :)

What the ****?? In my humble inadequate opinion, Dark Souls did not suffer much from technical glitches, it suffered from design issues only surmountable by the user through farming. The only thing I couldn't forgive From for, is not making another title and addressing the design shortcomings of Dark souls. While it was frustrating as all h, Dark Souls was probably the most addictive and enjoyable game I've every played....period. I did, however, concern over it's ability to sell enough to justify another sequel. Very niche and potentially off-putting game. Saw a LOT of used copies at gamestop!! Why is it that only the Japanese seem capable of producing a title like Dark Souls? I will literally need to up my dose of anti-depressants if they do not make a 3rd game....and a 4th and 5th. fkuc CoD every november....I want Dark Souls!!

Usually the largest most complex games have the most bugs; it's simply a by product of putting so much into the game (usually). I liked Dark Souls and thought it was a well done game and to me the bugs didn't diminish it at all.

Dark Souls is one of the best games I have ever played. I had no complaints playing it from day 1, and experienced no technical difficulties or glitches whatsoever from day 1. Saying all this, there is no reason to forgive you, as in my eyes you have made an excellent game. I would definitely pre order the next in the series. I think Bethesda could take a leaf out of From Software's book and apologise for their record breaking amount of glitches and bugs, which they have not done for a long time now, and take they take the p*** releasing patches which are NEEDED whereas Dark Souls, patch was not needed especially for me to fully enjoy the game. kthxbai

@Gelugon_baat I have to say the Dark Souls glitches were particularly minor and since the latest patch almost non-existent. Certain other games last year released in a much worse state then Dark Souls *cough* Skyrim. The mechanics in both games however are solid, I'd rather have a great game with glitches then a mediocre one without any; both of the above games are superb examples of this.

O please, please, please, please don't say that. Demon's Souls captured my entire imagination. Dark Souls was a wonderful addition and overall improvement, and leaves me anxiously waiting for another installment, and Im not even done with my 4th play through. Ive even made a mental list of aspects that I would like to see improved in an already nearly perfect formula. I will even go so far as to say that these two games are the best combo of games in any series that Ive ever played, and Ive played a lot.

Miyazaki is being overly dramatic to show how sorry he is. You basically claim you deserve a wildly disproportionate punishment for some mistake you have made and the audience becomes sympathetic. If this were a TV show, Dark Souls would be an abusive boyfriend who says, "I'm gonna kill myself if you don't come back to me!" And gamers are the bruised up girlfriend who says, "No! I still love you!"
