Bethesda Opens Up on Doom 4's Cancellation

"We don't feel like it is an option or a choice to put out something that is half-baked or not all the way there."

Publisher Bethesda has opened up on the reasons behind the cancellation of Doom 4.

In an interview with OXM, the company's VP of marketing Pete Hines said the project, scrapped in 2013, was "just not Doom."

Now Playing: DOOM: Pre-Review Thoughts - The Lobby

"With Doom it was a tipping point," said Hines. "We looked at it and said, "This game is not hitting the marks it needs to hit." And it wasn't just Bethesda, it was [the game's developer] id coming to us and saying, 'It's not that it's not a good game or an okay game, but it's just not Doom. It's veered from the things that we think Doom should be about.' And again, it's not like we were happy about it! We essentially canceled a game. That's what we did. We canceled a thing that people had spent a long time working on and we'd spent a lot of money to get to that point and then we canceled it and basically started over. Which is never easy to do. But it was because we believed in and agreed with the notion of, 'If this is going to be a success, if it's going to be worth all this time and effort, then it has to be the right thing, executed the right way.'"

Hines went on to talk more generally about cancelling games, after Bethesda had also scrapped Prey 2: "We are still a company. We do have to pay salaries and keep the lights on and it's not like we take these things lightly or easily. Games are hard to make and sometimes things happen. But we never take that stuff like, "Oh, it's fine, take as long as you want." No, we have a business and we need to try and make money on this and pay everybody on time. So we don't take that stuff lightly. But we do believe that, ultimately, if the game isn't good and isn't right, then this has all been for nothing. If it's not ready, if it's not what it needs to be, then we don't feel like we have any other choice. We don't feel like it is an option or a choice to put out something that is half-baked or not all the way there."

Bethesda is now working on a reboot of Prey with Dishonored developer Arkane Studios.

Hines has previously spoken to GameSpot about Prey 2's cancellation: "Games get canceled. It happens. Marriages go bad. It happens." You can read the rest of that interview here.

Hines has also stated that the scrapped Doom 4 had a "Call of Doom" feel to it. The new version, simply titled Doom, would go on to launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in May 2015 to positive reviews. Here at GameSpot, we placed Doom in our top 10 games of 2016--read the full list here.

"We don't feel like it is an option or a choice to put out something that is half-baked or not all the way there."

Where's that mentality when it comes to releasing games that aren't buried in bugs?

i didn't feel doom 2016 was that great either, sorry.

The original doom titles have something which you can still play today and enjoy.

@itchyflop: Doom 2016 is great, but only in the context of how awful first person shooters have become. Taken on its own its inferior to the originals.

The original games are the basis for what first person shooters should be, but retarded gamers see that format as being "outdated."

@deactivated-5876c0cfb498b: agreed, Doom 2016 was very fun. I've played through the single player twice. The multiplayer just doesn't do it for me though, feels cheap.

@itchyflop: I kinda feel like DOOM 2016 is exactly what original Doom 1&2 would have been if today's tech had existed then. If you really pay attention, it is pretty much the same good ol' Doom if only a bit shinier. It's great.

@apieceoftoast: I prefer the original games because I was about 3 when I found and played them. Was magic and now the nostalgia is magic.

DOOM is alright, but new games just don't do it anymore. Maybe 1 out of 100 games brings something truly interesting

@PrpleTrtleBuBum:thanks for replying, im inclined to agree with that however 1993 Doom was from a different generation of games and era, only a handful of maze type fps were around like xybots (1987) or corporation (1990 amiga), myself being a teenager growing up with atari, sinclair, commadore, sega genesis etc i was very much used to the software on those consoles and enjoyed with it!!

Today Doom is competing with a lot more such as cod or bf being examples, back then it brought a new style and look of play no one had really seen (not forgetting wolfenstein).

What im trying to say is maybe its not enough having been used to other titles like GTA other great games which are considered normal, i do like Doom 2016 and its great to see it again, i think for me i need to revisit the nostalgic way of playing and keep that in mind.

Plus the multiplayer is really weak.

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: Same for me. I love the new DOOM but I think it's more difficult of a industry now in some aspects particularly how well games are received because every gamer's expectations have risen rightfully so. Plus with all the niche games today there's pretty much something for everyone. From your old school platformer gamers to your eye candy demanding consumers.

@itchyflop: I disagree about your first statement. I noticed I pick it up every now and then, same way I always did with the original Doom. It is a great arcade shooter that most certainly accomplished its goal.

@ecs33: hey fair enough its your opinion and preference like mine above.

I may like other software on other systems too that you dont thats the beauty of gaming.

With respect maybe i haven't given it enough time to fully appreciate it, from what i have played so far i can take it or leave it and the multiplayer portion isn't great is it?

@SOul_FUNk: critically it has acclaim and I honestly think it also did well enough with gaming community and commercially. It's more my opinion, but I based it on the acclaim of the thousands of thumbs up reviews on steam.

The original DOOM 1 and 2 had something about it, that STILL makes me like playing it over and over to this day. I don't get that feeling with DOOM 2016. It was a fun game, I enjoyed playing through it. But it's not a game like the original DOOM games that still draws me to go back and play it from time to time, especially with the new Brutal doom mods. Maybe it's the level design. The original Doom games, didn't feel like I was walking into an arena, then next arena. The Original DOOM games made me feel like I was walking into levels of the MARS base. I got that same feeling from DOOM 3, I felt like I was walking through levels of the Mars base, not just set up arenas like DOOM 2016. I felt like I was playing Call OF Duty Zombies in DOOM 2016 sometimes, or Killing Floor 2. I'm not sure what it is. I Loved the Wolfenstein reboots more I think, By far. I could play the new wolfenstein game again a few times more, than I could play DOOM 2016 again. I barely even felt like finishing the new DOOM 2016. I played the new Wolfenstein from start to finish without taking a break I enjoyed it so much. I do't think people are giving DOOM 3 level design enough credit. It felt like an actual Mars facility.

@nyran125tk: Absolutely despised Doom 3. It was good for the first half but the monster closets and demons that teleported in front of you got real old, real fast.

This new Doom was way more fun than Doom 3.

@nyran125tk: To each his own, so I'm not knocking anything you said. But I have to disagree with you about the new Wolfenstein reboot being better than the new Doom reboot. When I played the new Doom reboot, it reminded me that I still love videogames. Which is rare, because lately, almost every game I play, I feel bored, and have to force myself to finish it. But with the new Doom, I loved every moment of it. The game felt like magic. Seriously, that's the best way I can describe it. Pure magic.

D00M is a great game and its only real shame for me was releasing close to Dark Souls III, which even now I always pick over D00M 2016 to play. Both great games and everything, yet in the end I always favor DkSIII.

I liked the idea behind it. There was Doom which was the Moon and Mars and Hell and all that stuff, Doom 2 which was Hell on Earth, Doom 3 was a re-imagining of the original, and Doom 4 was lined up to be a re-imagining of Doom 2. Doom 2 was supposed to be Hell on Earth but because technology was so limited back then, nobody could really create a convincing world like that. Doom 4 was an opportunity to really flesh that out. Of course the Call of Duty gameplay can go **** itself, but I kind of wanted to see the world that they could have created.

@jinzo9988: New Doom was Call of Duty like in gameplay? We must have played a different game. At least in Doom, you actually know who's shooting at you, and your AI computer teammates don't kill the enemy for you. When I play a Call of Duty game, my brain goes into robot mode/dumbed down mode.

The new Doom does not feel like a true Doom Game also, but rather like a solo player arena shooter where you are thrust in one gaming arena after the other and shoot enemies until you have fulfilled your quota. Then a door/barriere whatever opens and you can move to the next arena.

So no sweat ... Bethesda ... you canceled a fucked up project to replace it with a fucked up project.

Truthfully, I liked Doom Reboot, it was a solid game but way too short. I would've like to seen a "Hell On Earth" storyline ala the cancelled project to continue the franchise similar to how Wolfenstein and TNO handled their said plotlines.

@profchrisk: The new Doom reboot was the perfect length. Not too long, not too short. And the perfect length where I still didn't mind doing a second run in nightmare mode. And the nightmare mode in the new Doom was actually fun, and not torturous like the original Doom nightmare mode, where enemies would just teleport behind you. That always felt so cheap.

Why does everyone feel that it was too short? It took me around 13 hours to beat. For reference, I beat Uncharted 2 in 11 hours.

I'm actually in the middle of the game now and it's refreshing in an era of chest high wall shooters. It's far faster and more "quick thinking" Then any shooter I've played since half life 2.

The stagger, chainsaw mechanism means your constantly trying to balance staying on the move with going in for the melee kill to recover health or ammo.

Best game I've ever played from ID software.

@Karjah: One of the things I loved most about the new Doom, is you never have to worry about running out of ammo. It's also so fun to play a game that lets you keep every gun you pick up. That keeps the game fresh because there are multiple ways of handling any situation. And the new Doom always gives you the tools you need; so If you're having trouble advancing, it's only because you are not utilizing the weaponry given to you.
