Bethesda Opens Up on Doom 4's Cancellation

"We don't feel like it is an option or a choice to put out something that is half-baked or not all the way there."

Publisher Bethesda has opened up on the reasons behind the cancellation of Doom 4.

In an interview with OXM, the company's VP of marketing Pete Hines said the project, scrapped in 2013, was "just not Doom."

Now Playing: DOOM: Pre-Review Thoughts - The Lobby

"With Doom it was a tipping point," said Hines. "We looked at it and said, "This game is not hitting the marks it needs to hit." And it wasn't just Bethesda, it was [the game's developer] id coming to us and saying, 'It's not that it's not a good game or an okay game, but it's just not Doom. It's veered from the things that we think Doom should be about.' And again, it's not like we were happy about it! We essentially canceled a game. That's what we did. We canceled a thing that people had spent a long time working on and we'd spent a lot of money to get to that point and then we canceled it and basically started over. Which is never easy to do. But it was because we believed in and agreed with the notion of, 'If this is going to be a success, if it's going to be worth all this time and effort, then it has to be the right thing, executed the right way.'"

Hines went on to talk more generally about cancelling games, after Bethesda had also scrapped Prey 2: "We are still a company. We do have to pay salaries and keep the lights on and it's not like we take these things lightly or easily. Games are hard to make and sometimes things happen. But we never take that stuff like, "Oh, it's fine, take as long as you want." No, we have a business and we need to try and make money on this and pay everybody on time. So we don't take that stuff lightly. But we do believe that, ultimately, if the game isn't good and isn't right, then this has all been for nothing. If it's not ready, if it's not what it needs to be, then we don't feel like we have any other choice. We don't feel like it is an option or a choice to put out something that is half-baked or not all the way there."

Bethesda is now working on a reboot of Prey with Dishonored developer Arkane Studios.

Hines has previously spoken to GameSpot about Prey 2's cancellation: "Games get canceled. It happens. Marriages go bad. It happens." You can read the rest of that interview here.

Hines has also stated that the scrapped Doom 4 had a "Call of Doom" feel to it. The new version, simply titled Doom, would go on to launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in May 2015 to positive reviews. Here at GameSpot, we placed Doom in our top 10 games of 2016--read the full list here.

I'd be much more willing to take Bethesda's word for it if they hadn't already released quite a few games which I consider to be half-baked myself, including the DOOM game that we received.

Don't get me wrong, I liked DOOM, (2016) but it just felt too short to justify a full $60 purchase, and as a fan of DOOM 3, the complete omission of the horror elements from DOOM felt like a big step backwards. Sure, DOOM 3 definitely went overboard with the horror elements and skimped too much on the action, but I still feel that the horror elements were fitting for a series in which the enemies are demons. Ideally, DOOM should have been a Single Player Focused First Person Shooter with Horror Elements, instead we got a straight up sorta generic FPS with too much focus on online multiplayer.

@Blk_Mage_Ctype: It really depends on what you are looking for. I can see people that liked Doom 3 being disappointed with the new Doom. However, like other have mentioned, those of us who played Doom 1 and 2 as they came out love that the new Doom went back to its roots. I hated Doom 3. It was not Doom to me. It felt more like Silent Hill or Resident Evil that tried to be Doom. It just wasn't good at either.

I agree the new Doom felt short, but man I was grinning ear to ear the entire time I was playing it. So that makes it totally worth the $60 because it was a game I enjoyed. Length is meaningless if the game is boring...

A game being good and worth it is just a matter of perspective.

@Greyden: The new Doom was the Goldilocks of length. Not too short, not too long. Just perfect.

@Blk_Mage_Ctype: Well, Doom 3 wasn't really much of a Doom game. The originals weren't horror, and Doom 3 really only ended up that way because id built the game around the engine, and that's kinda what they were able to make. Doom 3 was horror because it couldn't be big rooms full of demons to shoot. I didn't mind the game leaning into the horror aspect of demonic invasions, I just didn't like much of anything about the actual gameplay in Doom 3.

The new DOOM is a straight up shooter because that's what Doom really is, and this time around id was able to do that. I didn't think DOOM felt generic at all; I thought it felt like how I remember Doom 1 and 2 feeling when I first played them back in the mid 90s. That's a real different feel than your CoDs, Halos, or Destinys.

@Mogan: I didn't like Doom 3 because throughout the game, the monsters would always teleport behind you. That got old fast. Felt cheap. I'm interested in killing the monsters in front of me. In a good shooter, you should always know where the enemy is located. Which is one of the reasons why Call of Duty games suck. Call of Duty *single player*, half the time you don't even know who is shooting at you. You have to memorize to advance. It's basically trial and error gameplay; which to me is incredibly boring.

Both ID and Bethesda did the right thing, scraping Doom 4 and going for a full reboot.

Doom 2016 was something that a lot of shooters have been afraid of being for awhile. Fun!!! It's simply, straightforwardly, unpretentiously fun. It doesn't water down mechanics to the point that it's point and click like Call of Duty. No infinite spawning enemies, no arbitrary 'just walk past the guys shooting at you and it all sorts itself out somehow' moments. No regenerating health, no half-assed iron sights system, maps that emphasize layered space and multifaceted pathways over linear corridors. It didn't build a core gameplay loop and then slap smug and condescending political commentary over it that ran in precisely the opposite direction of that loop. None of that.

With all of that said, I truly wish both MS & 343 look at what Doom 2016 brought to the table, they need to take the ideas from what ID did and go back to what made Halo great.

@sellingthings: No just go back to what made Halo Combat Evolve famous and after CE, the Halo series kinda went downhill but however, all the Halo games made by bungie were great, I just wish 343 would learn something that ID did with Doom reboot.

@leeshunshin: Well, aside from workshops and settlements, Fallout 4 at least featured interesting random encounters, dungeons (even if the procedural quests worked against immersion) and companions (a first ever for Bethesda). Vanilla Skyrim, on the other hand, was and remains wholly inexcusable.

@sellingthings: Yes, yes they were half baked. Both had bad, underdeveloped stories and characters (most of them). Both were full of bugs. Both have questionable UI choices.

But yes, both are revered by the masses as great games, when they're very flawed. To each his own...

@silversix_: Even trolling Destiny in non-Destiny articles. The SALT is real with you isn't it? If it takes you this long to not get over your misinformed prorder/dayone purchase of a video game, I could just imagine what happens in your real life stuff. Sad little boy you must be. LOL!!

There has to be more to it than "it's just not Doom". Otherwise, they could've just rebranded it and started a new franchise.

@DragonAtma: They could have easily marketed it as a a completely new IP " from the makers of doom".

@spartanx169x: But that new IP would have been a pretty generic war shooter that didn't even have a big, well known name attached. Plus, they'd have had to find the people to keep working on Call of DOOM while the DOOM team went off and rebooted the project into what we got.

@Mogan:Maybe , Maybe not. It would greatly depend on how strong/weak the story was to go with it. In my opinion, good stories and lore are what can launch a new IP. Additionally, They could have done some cool stuff with the MP. There are lots of things that can be done PvP wise that are not being done. But anyway, it doesn't matter, whats done is done.
