Baldur's Gate III a 'long-term goal' - Overhaul dev

Studio chief operating offer says he wants to make third core entry in role-playing game series, Kickstarter funding "makes so much sense."

The studio behind the upcoming enhanced editions of Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II wants to build Baldur's Gate III. But many events have to happen before the project sees the light of day, Overhaul Games has revealed to GameSpy.

Tofer wants to make Baldur's Gate III happen.
Tofer wants to make Baldur's Gate III happen.

"Baldur's Gate III has been our long-term goal," Overhaul Games chief operating officer Cameron Tofer said. "We have a lot of things to put in place before such a project can be launched. So currently there is no such project but that's the one we want to do. Our thoughts have been that Enhanced Edition for [Baldur's Gate] and [Baldur's Gate II] just make sense before there's any Baldur's Gate III."

As for how Tofer hopes to get Baldur's Gate III off the ground, he said using fan-funding service Kickstarter would be an effective course of action.

"We're totally thinking Kickstarter," he said. "It just makes so much sense and solves so many problems. I think what Brian [Fargo] is doing with Wasteland is very interesting."

The Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign for Wasteland 2 reached its goal of $900,000 in just two days, and as of press time, it stands at over $1.37 million. That game is scheduled to arrive in October 2013.

The most high-profile Kickstarter game fund was Double Fine's campaign for its Double Fine Adventure game. In a record eight hours, the studio reached its $400,000 goal, ending last week at $3.3 million.

Would you support a Kickstarter fund for Baldur's Gate III? Let us know why in the comments section below.

And the Kickstart bandwagoners start coming out the woodwork and piling on. It's the game scene equivilent of Dan Brown's book The Davinci Code. Once that became popular, all you could see on bookshelves for months and months after were craploads of other Dan Brown wannabee titles around the same mystical theme. Zzzzzzz. I think we should all see if Schafer and Fargo manage to deliver the goods first before we all start chucking gobs of cash at yet another project trying to cash in on a popular retro-game franchise.

Sure hope that by "overhaul" they mean updated graphics and longer game play, and not the current "overhauls" where it turns into a FPS with a week of game play.

I probably would support this, but come on, have some originality plz! ever since Double Fine decided to use Kick-starter to fund their point and click adventure game and made $3 million dollars, now everybody's has to come out of the woodwork and start copying them! un-original copycats!

@rshine Good one. As if KOTOR was screwed up; even Dragon Age Origins was good. If they take a path of DA2, then you should be worried.

So long as they dont screw it up like Dragon Age or KOTOR. Baldurs Gate 2 is one of the best games of all time IMHO. Would definitely support a kickstarter fund

@DredWulf BioWare developed the title, Black Isle published it. Before disbanding, Black Isle sold the IP rights to Atari. Get it now?

Well now, I'd be happy to give some kickstart money...once they prove they can at least refresh/update/enhance BG I correctly. Show us that Overhaul can do it, we'll do it in return. Sorry guys, though you may have some of the orginal devs, you aren't Fargo or Schaefer. Gotta show us first.

Lol - I am genuinely suprised that most people on here haven't realized this. Though for a low-budget game with this kind of funding it may not matter. I really don't particularly care either way as long as the combat system is done well.

Combat system!? Pen and paper is not about combat or graphics... Are you aware some of those games could be finished without a single fight?

@darktruth007 that is the craziest thing I have ever heard. D&D isn't relevant in virgin's basements anymore but the D&D Rulesets have been the reason why these games have been good. There is yet to be a system as deep which shouldn't be surprising as most developers only have their development process to create their system where D&D rules have been refined for like 30 years

It's not BioWare or Obsidian making the game isn't it their IP though licensed to WoTC? Would it even hold a candle to those mighty gems?

If they keep the same game aspect with nowadays graphics and music this game will be probably the best RPG in the market.

@Observ3r agreed mate...DAO was superb because it feels like Baldur's Gate...then DA2 came it...much like Mass Effect with sword...shattered the franchise big time....face it...some games are meant for PC only

I'd be prepared to support BG 3 but lets wait and see what happens with BG 1 + 2 Enhanced Editions first. There were a lot of balance issues in the games, especially in BG 2 so I'd like to see how these are addresses first and how well Overhaul update graphics, interface etc. If they can do a good job on these though I think they will get a lot of support for BG 3

Yep. Keep things like they were in BG and I'll do it. 2E rules shouldn't be difficult since it probably wouldn't require an expensive license, and those are basically open to download. Wizards is probably on 5E by now anyway.

I fully agree that we should wait and see what happens with the special editions before we cry BGIII. Remember DA2 anyone? Better to see what the remake turns out than hope for a follow-up that ruins the franchise.

Wow when i saw this i had to comment. I just installed Baldurs Gate Tales from the Sword Coast last night again on my new netbook. Ive played them both through about 4 times since their release date including The Dark side of the Sword Coast. In the 90s Interplay and BlackIsle just made the best games in history which also includes Fallout of course. Im excited and my money is in hand. I waited nearly 10 years for Fallout 3, It is time for BG 3!

I haven't played any of the Baldur's Gate games, but from all the praise that is heard about them, it's obvious that there is absolutely no way a BG3 could live up to the expectations of the fans.

@emperiox That is a valid concern, but consider the following question. Would you ever purchase another game from a company who took your money under false pretenses? If I pledge money to a game that otherwise would not be made and that company gives me feces in software form, I'd never purchase another thing from them, and software companies rely heavily on repeat business. Take a look at a video game company's financials sometime. Their income in years where they don't have a major game release are incredibly low, if they don't establish a loyal fan base who will purchase their next product, they might as well close their doors.

@kca89 I mentioned that earlier in this thread. There's some bad consumer implications to kickstarter. Example: what if Blizzard said: "There's going to be no Diablo 4 if X amount of money isn't donated to kickstarter by Y date at 12PM Eastern time!". Kickstarter funding can be a really bad thing if it gets abused. My worry is that EA or Activision is going to pull some crap to make it cheaper to release an AAA title and still give less. There's some serious potential for companies to abuse and use their fans, and that isn't something that I want to see.

@toddx77 I'm pretty sure any future entries in the Dragon Age series will be vastly improved. They even canceled an expansion because they know people are severely disappointed with the second game. Plus, they want to take a different approach on the next installment, which they said is borrowing heavily from the open world style of Skyrim.

This is what I was hoping for with that teaser site. I'll pledge some $ for it in addition to buying the enhanced editions, because it's a series that I've been wanting to revisit for so long. It's just too hard for me to sit down and enjoy a game with dated visuals, which is the only reason I haven't played the originals in a long time. Does that make me shallow?

I dont care about Baldur's Gate 3 if it only caries the name just like most of the sequels to great franchises recently. Give us a true Baldur's Gate that remains true to it's roots. If you want to test new creative ideas go and find a new IP. As Baldur's Gate 3 we want a Baldur;s Gate! Keep that in mind please! We dont want a third person hack n slash RPG! We want a huge Isometric RPG (open ended+good main story+Baldur's Gate peculiar battle system)!!!!
