one of the best turn based games on a portable

User Rating: 9.5 | Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising GBA
First thing I need to day. If you don't have this game but you have a GBA or a DS you need to get this game if you can't find this game get another one in the series. You will not be disappointed even if you're not a fan of this type of game.

If you're reading this review you're probably thinking one of these 2: "yeah man it's a great game played the first one and the second one is great too" or "its another turn based strategy game its like any other one of its types what so special about it" if your one of those people with the second review let me tell you why this game is great.

First you have a decent variety of ways to play. You have campaign where you follow the story of all the CO's (commanding officers) fighting against the menace from the previous game known as Black hole. Then you have versus which you should probably have figured out what this mode is but just in case I'll tell you. Versus is where you take all the CO's you've unlocked and battle against up to 3 other CO's. the best thing about this mode…well actually there are a lot of good things. There is a wide variety of different maps to choose from and unlock able ones by buying them from the shop which is where you can also buy CO's from there after you beat there campaign. Next there is a pass around multiplayer in versus, where you pass around the GBA or Ds taking turns moving units and attacking which is pretty cool. Another good thing about this is that you can play maps that you've created in edit mode (you can also edit co' colors) and play it in versus my only complaint about this is you can only save up to 3 maps at a time. The other modes are: edit and shop which I just talked about and then there is HARD CAMPAIGN which you unlocked after beating campaign. All it is, is a harder campaign with some redesigned maps and there is also war room which puts you an a scenario that you have to beat, but enough about game modes lets get to gameplay.

The controls are pretty simple, move your cursor around and press A to select a unit. Easy and simple. Next there are CO's. The CO's are each divided up into different factions each army has different looking units but all do the same job, destroying the enemy. The factions are orange star, blue moon, yellow comet and green earth (this is order is the order in which each different campaign will be unlocked) each CO's each has unique abilities called powers and super powers, basically these powers have the ability of turning the tide of battle if used right. For example take the Co Andy for example is power repairs 2 hit points to all units in his army and his super power replenishes 5hp.

Then there are attributes for each CO. Like a CO might have increased firepower for air units but his naval units may have decreased firepower.. Speaking of units lets move on to this topic. There are 19 different units in the game including one new one, the neotank, its firepower is basically the equivalent of a fighter plane.

Now this is obviously a long review so I'll finish the review fast. The last 2 things to talk about is sound and graphics. The sound is great some nice music and some great sfx are cool especially the explosions. The graphics are 2d and the environments and units are well detailed. Well as you can see this game is a must have in your GBA or DS collection.
