Danny...think you forgot Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. It came after AC2 and before Revelations.

Yeah, I meant how he skipped it in his analysis when he was talking about AC2 and then went right to talking about Revelations and how disappointing it was. Brotherhood was actually pretty good.

Great show again. Looks like The Point is the new thing. Johnny was the rising star of Gamespot, no longer. That's what happens when you deliver a big FU to your entire viewing audience!

I think danny is spot on with this point. Every time I play an assassin's creed game, I am waiting to get to the part where I get to see Desmond's story. I want to get done with this animus stuff and see how Desmond's story goes. Sure the history is fun. The different characters are neat. But the animus portions threw me off. I wanted to be either in one place or the other. Not both at the same time.

The answer to your question: expert-centered development vs. process-driven development.

Typically studios can't handle the losses of their "superstar" dev-team members, because they aren't process-driven. Once the experts depart for greener pastures the studio hits a wall until they can replace the superstars...which is really hard to do.

I don't know, I had a complete opposite opinion of the first AC. Yes it was beautiful to look at and the story/setting was unique, but it became immediately apparent to me that it's restrictive and repetitive gameplay was holding me back from completing it and therefore ranking it mediocre at best. The reason I play games, after all, is to experience an immersive gameplay, not great story (I would read a book instead) or good graphics.

It was actually very surprising for me that it did get a sequel and became successful, though not much have changed since then.

@cboye18 A lot of people (me included) saw the first AC as the start of something that could actually be wonderful and then we got what we wanted that game to be when AC2 came out =)

The one of the reasons why I stopped playing AC (after Brotherhood) is because of the repetitiveness, making the same game every year, expecting people to spend 60$ on it and play it and thinking this time is gonna be different wont work, at least not for most gamers

If Ubisoft released ACs every 3 years (like normal developers do), the game would be popular as GTA now, they made a huge mistake in yearly releses coz that only leads to downfall

@Sky_Stifler I also think it would have been better as a trilogy. They should have wrapped it up in 3 games, instead of making an endless series.

@zenstrata Tbh the game had a potential to be more than just a trilogy, Desmond and his machine and stuff, you know, but doing it every single year is what killed it, look at GTA, it's not the trilogy and it's not yearly release, and it's one of the best games out there

When some companies become greedy (you know who you are) they'll just try to milk the franchises with crappy yearly releases

God, listening to the music reminded me how much I loved AC2. It was a masterpiece from the artistic direction to the soothing music of Jesper Kyd. And now I see how AC 3 was....it only the only thing common between the games was that it shared the same name. AC 2 had heart, AC 3 had bigger wallet.

Although I thought Assassins Creed 3, I'm still excited about the series based on the mechanics alone. The worst part of Assassins Creed 3 is that it seemed like the game was half intro and held your hand the whole time. which i think was the point of this video in short, So i fully agree.

Nothing has happened to it. It still remains a fantastic game. There is something known as change and evolution, kids. It's a fact. If Assassin's Creed kept making game after game after game in the same location and the same time period, then it would be another Call of Duty, and people would criticize it for being unimaginative. But then they change and move to new sceneries, and you guys are bitching about it?

I liked brotherhood and the original. Didn't get into the second one, and Revelations was simply too much -- Ezio too old at that point (both in age and the THIRD game to star him as a character). But AC3 has been spectacular. I love it. The scenery and era that AC4 takes place in is one of my favorite. I don't buy into this commentary at all. Sorry.

@Master_Adeum Only good thing is scenery change and CoD is doing that too, but both are failing at one thing: No big gameplay changes

If they want yearly releases you have to give gamers are reason to play it, coz most of them will become bored of same thing over and over

And we all know they can't change a lot in a year, and that's the problem with yearly releases

I Full Sync'ed every AC game so far (the 5 big ones that is) and I'm as excited for Black Flag as I was for AC2. Yeah Revelations was lackluster and AC3 was just bad but I have hope. And if I'm wrong I'll just blame VanOrd =p

Never really thought about your last point on how all of a sudden there's UI everything and buttons presses flashing in your face non-stop but you're right, it does lessen the experience.

I also have to admit I'd be fine without the Animus arc altogether...the "let's interrupt your game to show you Desmond sulking again" really annoyed me =p

Good job once again Danny =)

I have a friend who is big into Assassin's Creed games. I gave him my copy of the first because it just didn't gel with me. Nothing wrong with it, I just didn't really get into it.

The second one I liked a lot more. I played his copy and ended up getting my own to see it through.

As for "what happened", well Ubisoft happened. Call of Duty happened. And annualized game releases happened. Time was when we'd be lucky to see a sequel within 3 years of one another. Now it's a November fixture and no signs of stopping. It's not special anymore. Not at all. It's just another annual release and that is easy to get cynical about. You don't have time to love them because the new one will be out before you can blink.

As a series, I view it as a cautionary tale. No offense to people who like them. I still like Halo games and their on their way to the same level. Taste is subjective so it's just down to what you like as an individual. But I hope in coming years and in the new gen we might see some series focus on craft over quantity.

@ZZoMBiE13 That's so true, I remember lining up at midnight to be one of the first people in my town to play AC2. And it really did feel special, like an event, and it made me feel like I was part of a small group. There was also the buzz of like minded gamers (Xbox and PS fanboys) all excited over that game. Now I ask my gaming friends if they excited about AC4 "Meh, there will another next year, I'll just grab that"

Would Grand Theft Auto 5, Batman Arkham City or Far Cry be as special if they had just been churned out 1 year after its predecessor?

I Hope I'm wrong about number 4 being run of the Mill.....

Even though I did finish AC3, I do agree that it was my least favorite of the franchise. I really am disappointed as well in how the series has turned out, and have very little interest in ever playing Black Flag.

@Slammer612You shouldn't think that way, I too feel that the AC 3 was a bit of a let down but, I enjoyed it for its mechanics and that's mostly why I played it not because of the story, but because it's a game and I had fun playing it, and it´s what i expect from AC IV.

@DrvoJavorovo Sorry, but in this day in age the story is an integral part of the game that makes it fun. If I am uninterested in the story then it gives me no real reason to continue to play and see what happens. I did not like Connor, he was boring. I liked the initial character though, and I think it might have been a an interesting idea to play as him for the full game instead of Connor.

Also it really felt to me that it changed into a full blown action game instead of a stealth game which it was initially. Which also worries me what will come of Watch Dog if they follow the same path as the AC series.

You're right. It became increasingly harder and harder to finish AC games. By revelations, I was like 75% and took a break. Felt more like work than fun. And I'd only be getting black flag because I've played the others. I on the other hand like the desmond animus story. It's my opinion that's the core story they want to tell. It's just not fleshed out well.

An ancient alien race on the brink of extinction with their only hope of survival is to create another race of people. One who's potential is amplified by other devices we call "apples". So they attempt to use this race and the"apples" to force them to create a shield large enough to cover the earth using only their force of will?

That's infinitely more interesting than a history simulator. I Just think ezio won over the people more than they intended. And then catered the story around that. How many games where ezio is the main dude? I doubt they planned that from the start.

@Busta Well, I avoided Desmond as much as possible. I felt actually let down with the direction that was taking, from one sci-fi 'explanation' to why you're playing in such a period, to these super aliens. That lost me. I for one am glad Desmond is over, as I would like to immerse myself in a new AC world without the bigger and convoluted twists that aren't necessary. But, each to his own. I hope you enjoy it in some capacity!
