Ask The Experts: Next Gen Incapability
What kind of support do the Xbox One and PS4 have for various media formats? It might not be what you expect. Find out if the new generation will leave you missing some key features of the PS3 and Xbox 360.
Just buy DLNA / Miracast TV. Since I upgraded my TV, Win8 explorer has new icon when I select media files - "play to" where I simply select my TV. Very cool!
I agree, WTF Sony was thinking. I am a huge PS fan and I used media functionality extensively. Really Sony, please bring back the media functionality and improve the PS3's foundation.
I know both companies said these feature would be add after launch (Q1, Q2). Xbox 360 and PS3 didn't have streaming features or a wide range of media support at launch either. This is what expert opinion has come down to, bashing both systems for something they will release in a patch over the next year?
I also don't like the fact that you can't see your trophy list offline anymore on the PS4, which is pretty lame, hopefully Sony will patch this as well.
Thankfully my TV plays pretty much every media file there is and has dlna, I listen to cd's on my 5.1 system. I get the feeling that this is to stop people watching/listening to illegally downloaded stuff on their consoles.
When will you retarded console peasants understand that consoles are not made for you, the consumer. They are made to give maximum control and monetary gain to the piece of shit companies and publishers at the expense of your freedoms. It's not even about what hardware is better anymore. By supporting consoles you are supporting the further decline of the gaming industry. How does it feel like to be voluntarily fucked in the ass without even knowing it? Consoles are evil.
If you live in Asia you can't use the movie services, they're blocked. And as for music who cares. I have an ipod and an ipad and all my music is from itunes, not on disks.
I want a ps4 to play good games, period.
I'm so disappointed that the PS4 and XBone doesnt even play movie files.
I used to use my Xbox 360 to play movies from a USB all the time.
Since I sold my xbox 360 to buy a XBone I havent been able to watch any movies from my USB :'(
i remember downloading music then putting it onto a disc and then onto my xbox 360 but then some update was added that blocked downloaded music from working and so screwing me from listening to music on my console :(
all this other shit can and probably will be patched in for both systems at a later date. who gives a fuck?
You guys hit everything that's made me disappointed. When the new console is an actual step backwards in terms of integrated media playback (really missing listening to music while gaming here) there's a problem. It's bad enough we're being forced into $50 and $60 gated communities on a yearly basis, but now they want to charge another $30 for music services on top of it?
well to be honest i never felt so disappointed with a new generation as i am feeling with this new one right now.
but ok we are still in the very beggining great games may happen, i do hope they do.
but right now man these both systems seems so just... meh! and it's interesting that the more i talk to people the more i see i am not alone, there's the fanboys of course that always get excited and stuff.
but everyday i see more and more people ignoring these new machines.
dont care about functionality from these consoles... they're supposed to be gaming consoles... if i want functionality, i have a PC... games!!! thats all i want a console to do and do well.... and even they cant even get that right half the time... Must install a disc-based game..?? ridiculous.. im seriously doubting my interest in buying a PS4.. zero interest in an Xbox since MS seems to care more about all that other stuff than the games.. and stuff like Halo and Titanfall and Dead Rising and Forza, i just dont care about... never had much interest in the games MS had to offer..
did I use the ability to play music last gen? no
did i watch a film from a media drive on my console? no
did I watch live television? ok maybe once...
I want Sony and Microsoft to make games consoles not media hubs, the reason I got a PS4 is because it was tailored towards the games.
Only thing I think is missing is playing background music from an mp3 player, but so many games have great soundtracks now anyway.
i dont care as long as it plays games... thats all i want a gaming console to do.. Microsoft seems to think gamers want all that other crap when the majority probably do not...
Sooooo....basically what you're saying is... buy a pc? I only ask because the last three shows or so are pretty much focused on why both ps4 and xb1 are actually worse than the consoles they replaced.
Also, gamespot, you seriously need to separate the Facebook comments from your website comments. It's a bit annoying to have to scroll through Facebook posts to get to a post by someone who will actually see it if I reply to their post.
sometimes when i get nervous...i like to put my hands in my armpits...and then i just pull them out real fast and smell them.
So, yeah, I'm still convinced not to by a next gen console until 1) better exclusives come out for either system, 2) The overall games and library of games gets better, 3) Microsoft and Sony release some significant UI software upgrades and expandability, 4) I start to see something decent come from Kinect and PS Eye..., and 5) Microsoft, please introduce voice recognition typing and search on par with Google Now. You make $, you have a console that can do it --- so DO IT!!!
I'm sure there's more that I'm not adding but if we learned anything from the shitty Microsoft DRM policies, it's that we have the power to changes almost anything (at least software wise) with these consoles.
I'll leave the hardware stuff to the modders.
that's why these newer systems are able to stream updates. Might not have it right now, but it wouldn't be hard to
This Jeff from cnet obviousl doesn't have any mkv files on his Nas if he doesn't have problems playing his media on his Ps3. The Ps3 is rather bad as multi media station, my Tv does much better so I don't really care that my Ps4 "just" does games, I use my Tv for everything else really
Yeah what article? All I see is a video - maybe I don't understand how to use the new GameSpot. Do you have a link to the words in the video - but in text? Like an article?
Is not a conspiracy. Buying and using their services is exactly why they did this. I really hate what the game industry has become.
They are GAMING consoles(PS4 more so). Any complaints of unsupported formats for other media is just stupid.
@RaymanDKfirst episode I watched and I liked it
@resorber you are an idiot, console gaming is what made games more mainstream. DRM and all the other forms of control came from PC user pirating shit. And, lastly idiots like you who drop $500+ on a video card to get top of the line graphics are whats hurting the industry. If you knew anything about game development, you would know that all the breakthroughs in technique, and awesome engines were made to get better graphics off of lesser hardware. Case in point, consoles force developers to design better games instead of being lazy and making you spend more money.
@RobDev I beg to differ.
The whole ideal behind 'propietary' devices and software is to CONTROL what consumers can and can't do. It's to funnel you into ONLY buying what they sell.
Want to listen to the music you own? Gotta buy those songs in the format they (Sony/MS) sells; you'll be repurchasing what you already own.
There's no guarantee that the supposed-problems would be addressed.
@pyro1245 haha same
@MattyTheButcherSweet! Let's fire up Code Veronica and forget all about this gen :)
Oh they're gaming consoles? Maybe you should tell Sony and M$ that, since they've gone far out of their way to tell us otherwise. The phrase "it only does everything" leaps to mind.
@lameoracleHey if he wants to do you are research, let him do so :)
@youre_a_sheep You'll find that the catchline for PS4 is #4thegamers not #4thetechfreaksthatneedtorouttheirmedialibrarythrougheverypieceofhardwareavailable
@youre_a_sheepThat phrase was used for the PS3 though, not for the PS4...
@The_Last_Paladi They also use the phrase "Xbox One, All in One" which is incredibly misleading when is has less support for other media than their previous system did.
