It's so... japanese!

As the official review already explained, the game concept is pretty straight foreward. You get dropped in an almost empty level (compare it to a chessboard if you must), and run around getting chased by one or more enemies. The bad thing, you are fragile and unarmed. The good thing, you got the power of the "Fiend" which allows you to defend yourself, the second bad thing, that power only works through setting traps.

Which means, you run around in the level, pause whenever you like and set traps and assign them a hotkey. Then you resume gameplay, wait for the trap to charge up, lure your enemy into it and activate it with the previously assigned hotkey. Rinse and repeat. Either wait for the trap to charge up again or enter strategy mode again to place it somewhere else.

Once all enemies are dead you are considered victorious, as a reward the storyline continues to progress through cutscenes, till the next mission.

Sounds boring? It actually isn't. It's an interesting mix of strategy, action, timing and adventure. However, the presentation is not really fit for the western market. Everything just reeks with japanese elements. From folklore to general attitude. Okay, that's not a bad thing, other games like Final Fantasy for example do that as well, however, the japanese "feel" goes down to such a deep and detailed level that neither the storyline nor the presentation will appeal to the average "western" gamer.

Therefore...

If you really really like the japanese feel of some games (compare it to Fatal Frame, which is by TECMO as well by the way and is stuffed with japanese elements to the same extent) or don't mind getting to know a foreign culture from its metaphysical side you will find an interesting mix of strategy, action and adventure in this title.

However, if you don't better not risk it. The gameplay doesn't outweight the presentation.
