A platformer superior to that of even Mario 64!

User Rating: 10 | Spyro: Year of the Dragon (Platinum) PS
Year of the dragon is the 3rd in the Spyro and in my opinion the best. The graphics were pretty good for it's time, it looks a little fuzzy now but the way Spyro's tail would swing with him as he moved was just a sign of the stellar graphical design here.

The story here is that all of the dragon eggs have been stolen and you have to get them back. The eggs are basically Spyro's equivilant of Mario's stars. There are a heck load of them to collect and to find all of the collectable eggs and gems is sure to take you a solid week or maybe months worth of game time. Truly a game to rival Mario 64's longevity.

The level design here is simply stunning with originality written all over the games design. A roman gladiator skatepark? A city in the clouds? Any thing you want, you name it and it'll most likely be there. It feels like the game is set in a 7 year old's dream given the bizarre level design but it's wonderful nonetheless. To add even more variety to a game that was already fresh 99.9% of the time, you can play as characters other than Spyro. Sheila the kangaroo is the first person you meet and with her crazy high jumps it adds more variety, there are other people too who all offer a unique style of gameplay.

The gameplay here is absolutely perfect, this game houses the tightest controls in video-game history. Simply put, if you die you can only blame yourself. The missions and egg hunting are both imaginative and fun and also challenging all at the same time! I'm not going to spoil anything but playing through the hidden sections of the game can warrant some missions so much fun that you'll want to play them after you've completed them.

Overall Spyro 3 is simply the best platformer of the era and quite possibly ever. A masterpiece to rival the mighty Mario! It's just a shame that from here it all started to go down hill.....
