I'm a big fan of old school shoot-em-ups and this is a great, fast action and incredibly good looking game. The screen is a constant particle explosion as you just blow s*** up all the time.
Apparently there's supposed to be some story about saving humans, and randomly one will jump out of a box and stick to the ship for some reason, but nobody I've chatted to about this game has any idea what you're actually supposed to be doing with them, and to be honest, nobody really cares, apart from blowing stuff up - and that's all that's needed! The humans will randomly be "in danger" - although it's hard to see why, or where the "human in danger" actually is, or why it dies - guess it gets shot somewhere on the map - meh. Anyway, back to the action - there's power-ups for shooting special ships, a smart bomb to kill everything on screen, some massive laser device with limited duration, and a boost which allows you to bash through groups of aliens to get score multipliers (again, no idea what these are based on, probably just killing loads of stuff, but they're cool :). It's kind of a cross between Defender, R-Type and Robotron, all set in a circular rotating playfield.
The game makes great use of the dual shock controller, with the spoken audio coming through the controller, and main soundtrack on the TV - it works really well.
Basically a game will only last a couple of minutes before it gets insanely difficult, or the humans run out (I guess?) - it's a great way to get a quick adrenaline rush if you don't have time to play a more involved game - as a drunken party game it's excellent!
If there's one small thing I'd like, it's having a mode without the humans in boxes - which seem kind of random, and detract from the action a bit.
More games like this please!
