@WillyWynn Nice. :) Which games show did you go to in order to play it & how long were you able to play it for? Or do you work in a games shop/other games industry role? Enjoy Devil May Cry & God of War, so I'd be happy if that was true. Hoping to try it out at EGX this weekend.

Still, whether it's an 8 or a 9 is a moot point. More concerned with the discussion of the games' pros & cons than whatever the final number awarded is. The only point which concerned me about this review was the "erratic story that concludes with anticlimactic battles".

Look forward to checking this out at EGX in London this weekend along with Alien Isolation. They're both on my list of games which have potential but there's still a few concerns I have which have so far put me off preordering them.

I tend to favour games with strong stories, so the "erratic story that concludes with anticlimactic battles" negative point is a bit worrying.

@oflow @max-hit They chose Assassin's Creed: Black Flag as the Game of the Year for the PlayStation 4, so it doesn't have to be an exclusive to win.

@Drilbit777 This game is better than Dead Island in my opinion. Dead Island wasn't really a survival horror game. It was a tongue-in-cheek action RPG with zombies.

Zombiu is a tense, old-school, challenging survival horror experience and by far my favourite survival horror game of the past few years. Zombiu 2 wouldn't be improved by aping Dead Island.

There are RPG elements in Zombiu (improving skills if you survive long enough) but they don't go overboard with it to make you so powerful that you can breeze through zombie hordes will ease (there's a time and place for that and silly upgrading weapons - I enjoy the Dead Rising games but this is a different breed of zombie game where your vulnerability is what makes the game work).

I don't think it's fair to say this game failed to live up to expectations based on this 4.5 review score. If you check out Metacritic, it's currently sitting at 76% with 40 positive reviews from critics and only one negative review (this one). All you can draw from that is that this one reviewer didn't enjoy the game.

My guess would be that you've hardly played Zombiu or haven't actually played it at all. I'm far from a Nintendo fan boy (bought a WiiU but also own a PS3 and a Vita - if anything I've leaned more towards Sony and Microsoft in the past) but it's a good launch game, generally the launch lineup is pretty strong and Zombiu is an important game in that launch lineup. Of all the launch titles, it's the one that most embraces Nintendo wanting to push the console more towards a hardcore, older demographic than the Wii was aimed at.
