No susprises here. It is actually a well done game, considering that it was created by an INDEPENDENT COMPANY!! congrats to them. It is thanks to these companies that PC will be renewed on the gaming community.
Yes! I played it before I posted my comments! My opinion is based on personal experience. (Sarcastic replies will be ignored.)
My remarks are offered as constructive criticism for the PoE devs, not "down votes". I would like to continue to play PoE but my budget does not allow it, unless I somehow gain some bonuses and life or mana stats with my health at 40% just a few yards in from the beach.
The first twenty minutes of PoE are Awesome: My UP vote.
Path of Exile looks good, but the P2P feature kicks in before you get off the beach! It would be a better game with a few early bonuses that allow you to actually experience the game.
Disappointing first few minutes for an otherwise good looking game.
Not sure I care for this new 'Hipster' gamespot. Seems like they are intentionally picking non-favorites. Which is what hipsters do.
No surprise here, this game is fantastically fun, and that's saying something coming from someone who's not really a fan of these types of games.
Great game been my addiction since release. Beta was a bit rough but launch was a huge improvement. And they're always updating. Imo best free game ever made.
I love it. It's ingenuitive in it's own right while borrowing successful themes from other games. It's gritty look and enormous customization options are a big plus. Kudos To GGG
"Best" seems like a stretch. Heck I haven't even really been hearing much about it. Granted I could just not be in the right circles.
overall the last two years were slow years for pc exclusives in general. PoE is a decent game but not really GOTY material, probably got picked because most of the other decent titles on PC werent PC exclusives.
Waiting for 2014 to actually bring some decent PC titles out. New Homeworld, a few real next gen MMOs (EQ Next, Blade & Soul, Wildstar, Project Spark, Star Citizen) and a bunch of voxel games.
Also, I can see how the didnt pick DOTA 2, considering it was officially released this year but its been in open beta forever and isnt really new, plus MOBAs are an acquired taste and lots of people dont like them. (Which you could also say about top down dungeon crawlers)
Seriously though, I had more fun playing Samurai Gunn and Solstice Arena than PoE.
i am in awe.. you picked PoE for GOTY!??? I couldnt play it for more than a few hours. Its horrible. Slow, felt like I dug out a game from 10 years ago... bad graphics, poor design, rude people, bad chat, poor money system.. the ONLY thing this game has going for it is that its free.. and thank god it was so i didnt waste any money.
I agree, fantastic game and its free!!! Obviously a lot of effort has gone into the game, a bargain!
Tried it, its just a mindless grindfest with stiff animations, poor graphics, confusing(but not actually deep) skill tree and its free so its understandable why its so popular - many gamers are either kids or unemployed basement dwelling nerds, both grups have no money and plenty of free time so PoE is perfect for them.
I have less than 2 hours spent in PoE before I uninstalled it out of boredom. I have nearly 2000 hours in Dota 2, I attended the International championship in Seattle. I can't understand how Gamespot overlooked the best PC game of 2013.
Best game of the year for PC?, not sure if I agree. Honestly I haven't really been happy with games the past few years, just a few titles made it to FUN and Entertaining, and half of them were probably indie games.
As this PoE isn't some AAA game, I think its worth giving it game of the year, it sure kicks Diablo 3's ass everywhere but graphics. Diablo 3 might have not have been dark, but they still did a awesome job with the graphics.
I think the problem with PoE is that is it is F2P. I think a lot of gamers don't want to go near anything with microtransactions and have all sorts of shop crap on the screen. PoE is nothing but cosmetic and its screen is kept clean.
D3, they said that they wanted to make it into their own game and so they did, instead of a 2nd sequel to the Diablo series. I can't stand playing it, its more repetitive then pokemon(ssdd in every game, aside from X/Y which looks fresh), the expansion for D3 coming out try's to met D2 half way.. but still isn't enough for me.
One of my buddies is really into PoE. I told him that I've only gone a few hours in, and didn't really like it that much. He said to give it til lvl. 30, that's when the game really picks up.
The fact that Gamespot included "Gone Home" as a nominee says it all. 2013 was a poor year for PC gaming.
yeah..really didn't impress me. Felt like a 3d mmo version of diablo. I just don't get anything from these types of games, especially when there isn't anything that's extremely innovative. It's nice that its free.
Actually, Zenimax Online (ZOS), developer of The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) is part of Zenimax. Bethesda and Bethsoft are also Zenimax companies.
ESO is being developed by a different dedicated team, but still part of the same Elder Scrolls family.
@jlconrod the first act is all about getting used to the game. PvP matches would suck with low quality equipment that you get from looting. I guess it is a wise decision to play PvP matches in Act 2.
@Tanares Aren't you playing the same game by complaining about what hipsters like? If a hipster likes it, you won't?
@Tanares Or perhaps it's actually a great game.
@iskaroth What a moronic comment from someone who can't even spell correctly. How do people with such horrible grammar get out of their mom's basement, and then have the nerve to speculate on other's employment status? Who hires stupid people like yourself?
@sammoth OMG its the thing that makes me hate the game the most.
@Vexov kicks d3's ass? not sure what you were playing... D3 is at least fun.. looks good and moves at a good rate. PoE was like watching molasses spill on a cold day. Its horribly slow, horribly dated, and all around just a bad game. Even TL2 got more of my time than PoE did.
@Succumbus The game is amazing from the beginning specially if you play with a friend. Your friend is right thought it does get even better as you progress through it.
@PewbertThe gamespot staff has a soft spot for those touchy feely boring games.
@NoThlnG the editors favorites are also the background.
@STrugglingFool Bioshock Infinite, POE, DOTA 2, XCOM: Emeny Within, AC: Black Flag. All great games
@ahpuck @Pewbert Gone Home is specially interesting. Some games are not only designed to entertain and that's how the industry can grow bigger and get recognition as a medium not only for children but all ages. Many gamers myself included found Gone Home to be extraordinary entertaining as well. It's a breath of fresh air among all the fast-paced action games.
@max-hit pretty sure it does thats how PoE won.
