It is not that simple, Tom. It takes more than just some experience points to build up an emotional connection with a character, and the perm-death will not solve that. I was more connected to Clementine than to any other soldier or world I had to save ever, even after realizing she would live no matter what I did, and I didn't have to spend a single XP point in her... so it' not about building up abilities, but stories and it is not about perm-death but about a good game design. Perm-death is just the newest patch to hide inability to create good stories /games.
@tom_cat_01 @noigel Really? So you identify yourself more with Lara than with a guy that was designed to be 'an everyman persona; an "ordinary guy...who really had to work hard for every leap and climb, and who got visibly nervous when under fire."' and whose only known relative is a "famous" english sailor called Sir Francis Drake? You sure you didn't make that up to "win" the discussion? ...naaah, sure you didn't...
@Katrinya @noigel Agreed. I don't know the cause, but it happens, some men don't like playing as a woman and some women don't like playing as a men, if this wasn't the case developers would have never added an option to choose your gender...
@Regenherz @noigel I don't have figures, but (as an example) only 5% of people I played with in GoW Deathmatch were women (sure there are more overall). I agree with you that the solution is simple (let the player choose their gender) but only sometimes (there was no chance of playing as "Jane Marston"). But what I don't like is that Carolyn is selling as sexism a matter that is purely economical; if women protaginists sold more than men protagonists videogames would all be starred by women...
Historically there's been more male gamers than female (and still are, at least playing AAA games). An important part for a videogame to success is that the player identifies with the main character, and being of the opposite gender is a very difficult barrier to overcome. That means less money for the developers and has nothing to do with a macho-conspiracy…
