Call of Duty is a great series

Final Fantasy 12 is the best in the series

Half-Life 2 is only average

Overwatch does not deserve GOTY if it offers gambling loot boxes

Metal Gear Solid 2 is the best MGS game

Metroid Prime is the best FPS ever made

On this site? Overwatch won, which bugs me more than it should. Its a decent game, but not GotY material.

@Planeforger: see, those tactics revolve around efficiency for me. I always try to max out the grading system for every fight, and those things I listed are what help that along. It's EXTREMELY boring for me to simply hack and slash my way through this game, and Im glad that doing so is actually really slow and makes fights drag on, at least in my experience.

Switching between effective weapon types on the fly in order to deal better damage, hitting blind spots to stagger opponents, dodging while maintaining your magic meter, timing your combos for better hits and AP gains, having to manually craft strong spells against opponents, and making sure your team stays alive through tougher sections while also utilizing their skills to even out the more unique and difficult encounters doesn't constitute depth? .....yeah, okay, whatever you say, pal. Just cuz it's different doesnt mean it's bad. I found plenty of depth in the combat. It's just the kind of depth found in an action game. I liken it more to Kingdom Hearts meets Final Fantasy, and Im fine with that.

@mrbojangles25: meh, I never felt connected to those characters even after playing through all of Half-Life 2 twice. I seriously dont get it. What connection am I supposed to form with these characters when Im playing a guy with no real interaction and zero personality?

Meh. Overwatch is fun and all, but it gets super boring after a while. That's my biggest issue with multiplayer-only games: a few fleeting game modes just arent enough to keep my interest. Gameplay is solid overall, even though a lack of customization for each character other than cosmetics kinda ruins it for me. Not to mention the loot boxes feels a lot like gambling when everything is randomized. So, no, I wouldnt put it as my GotY no matter how fun it is in the moment. For me, GotY goes to 3 games: Uncharted 4, Dark Souls 3, and Final Fantasy 15.

People that use it are usually trying to degrade the game they're talking about. I would just say they're minimally interactive, cuz all you do is move and click on objects (possibly moving them too). And if they're saying that about games like Uncharted 4, they're hate-trolling cuz they dont like the game.

As for how to classify this "genre", I'd say look at a game like Dear Esther, as that game is literally nothing but walking and listening to a story being told. Games like Gone Home have you piecing a story puzzle together by exploring. The Stanley Parable makes a mockery of choices in that same kind of environment. It's basically the new adventure game model, only without the moon logic puzzles keeping you from going further.

@turtlethetaffer: well I dont care about the graphics. Hell, I know it's an old game. I'm just saying that in all the years I've heard about this game, I've not seen a single screenshot, video, or anything related to the in-game stuff. I find that a bit strange is all, cuz I always try to look up games I'm vaguely interested in.
