Don’t get me wrong, Carolyn comes in for some of the harshest criticism I’ve ever read. Seriously hurtful, personal attacks that are not just in bad taste but are actually vindictive. It is completely uncalled for especially as she ended up giving the game a 9/10.
HOWEVER, as soon as I saw Carolyn was reviewing GTA V I knew there would be some agenda pushing feminist rant in there. That’s because to Carolyn the portrayal of women in video games is really important and so she like to talk about it in her articles. In principle I take no offense at that (even if her ideological crusades are becoming a bit predictable) but GTA has always reflected gangsters in popular culture, in which there is a scarcity of female roles. Rockstar didn’t create the Goodfellas/Boyz N Da Hood/Sexy Beast criminal stereotypes. You don’t play CoD and then complain about the amount of camouflage patterns that are used in the military!
With this in mind, why would Gamespot assign such a reviewer to this particular game? The vast majority of us agree that there’s a wider role for female characters in games but using the review of the biggest game of the year to push forward an agenda is just unnecessary and in poor taste.
So yes, some of our community have been juvenile, vulgar and crass. Personal attacks have no place when you’re talking about someone’s opinion. But their response isn’t a completely unprovoked attack. Staff at Gamespot, if you want to sermonise, restrict it to an editorial.
Or… you could ramble on in the comments section, like me.
Hooray, yet more politicians with no evidence making sweeping statements. Ever think that those with violent sensibilities may just consume and obsess over violent video games? I really can't imagine the Columbine shooters going home and playing Cooking Mama.
I used to vote Lib Dem but Clegg has gone out of his way to completely convince me otherwise. You know who the main block of Lib Dem voters are? 18-35 year old educated young professionals/students. You know who the main block of gamers are? You work it out Clegg, you frickin' omnishambles.
The reason why people are getting judgemental is because we’ve played this game before. Twice. And loved it to bits both times. We don’t want the Arkham games to become another CoD with yearly instalments rushed out it’ll kill the franchise we love! I think most of us want quality developers like Rocksteady to do their work in their own timescale instead of having publishers trying to milk every existing IP completely dry within 3-4 years!
I’ll admit the MP element has me intrigued but I’ll pick this up around Xmas when it’s dropped in price.
