If you'll read the reviews you'll notice common themes in their praises and their criticisms. The difference between the reviews is some of the reviews place more importance on things than others. Some reviews will say that it's linear, but thats okay because it works. Others will say that it's linear, but it has other redeeming features. And other reviews will say, its linear there is no point to this game whatsoever.

I hate the idea that "linearity" has become this stigma that a game needs to overcome in order to be reviewed well by some reviewers. Linearity should not be a blanket negative mark, especially for a narrative-driven experience. Some games and the stories within them are well suited to being "linear." Essentially it's like criticising Final Fantasy XIII for not being open world or having multiplayer or coop, things that don't fit the game at all really, instead of judging the game on its own merits.
The strength of Final Fantasy has always been on its epic stories presented with fantastic polish and the battle and upgrade systems you use to traverse the tale being told. By most accounts I've read so far this game does that as well as if not better than most Final Fantasies of yesteryear.
Some of the scores seem ludicrous. 5? Really? How on earth is this game averaging less than Final Fantasy X-2? :?
So sooo true.. This game must be linear to succeed. the game is very long, with a well thought out story, and it deserves alot more credit. Sometimes i wonder if fanboys are reviewing the game.
Honestly, the game is great. Fans of the series will mostly love it; newcomers might not appreciate it as much.
