As far as I can see, the DS has always been a souped-up Gameboy, so what's the problem? If you ignore the bottom screen (and a couple of extra buttons), it plays GBA games excellently. There are quite a few good DS games that ignore the touch screen too, although honestly, I think once you get used to having a touch screen, you won't want to go back. Although some games use it for silly gimmicky things, others implement touch controls fabulously, and some of the more fun games just couldn't be played without them.
On the other hand, why would you want to play ten Pokemon games if they never changed the Pokemon you could collect. It'd be boring as all get out. Since they barely evolve the gameplay each time, it's the only way to keep people interested...
