Ron Dennis was philosophical in the wake of the Brazilian Grand Prix as neither McLaren drivers could secure the World Championship

Going into the season finale at Interlagos Lewis Hamilton led the Drivers' standings and Fernando Alonso was second. However, Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen pipped the pair to the title.

And the McLaren team boss took defeat like a man saying: "At difficult moments like this, you've just got to have a sporting attitude to the outcome," he told ITV. "It's hard to find the right words. But I think our team have done a good job all year and should be proud of their achievements."

Dennis also bemoaned the timing of Hamilton's reliability problems, which really hurt the Brit's tilt at winning the Championship

"Ferrari suffered their reliability problems in the beginning of the season, and we've had some today," Dennis said. "So it's not about one race, it's about the World Championship.

"But as I said, this is a sport, and we will be sporting about it. Lewis has enjoyed phenomenal reliability from his car this year, so we haven't done a bad job this year. It's just come at the wrong time.

"This year has been challenging for lots of reasons, as you know. But we've got to be positive and sporting, and we look forward to next year."

Fernando Alonso relinquished his crown to Kimi Raikkonen at the Brazilian Grand Prix and lauded the Finn as a "deserving" Champion

The Spaniard finished third on the day and this coupled with Ferrari shutting out the top-two positions handed Raikkonen his first ever title.

And the double World Champion was gracious in defeat saying: "First of all, congratulations to Kimi.

"I said many times who has more points in the last race deserves the championship, so in this case Kimi did a great Championship. It was up and down for everyone, at the end he deserves it, so congrats to him."

After a tumultuous year at McLaren Alonso maintains that he is "comfortable" with the team and praised the machinery that the Woking-based outfit handed him.

He said: "I think at the end, in other jobs you have up and downs, you have better moments and bad moments. This year I had difficulties with the team, it is no secret, but we tried to work as hard as we could and we arrived at the final race fighting for the Championship.

"We finished third, one point behind in the world championship, we had a great car, a fantastic car, (so) even if it was a tough season I have great memories of this season, so I feel comfortable."

Alonso says he expected the Ferraris to dominate the race, so when they ran one-two from the first corner, all he could hope for was for one of them to break down, in order to stand a chance of winning the title.

The former Renault driver admitted that he just didn't have the pace to match the Prancing Horse on the day,

"I knew it would be very difficult. "I knew (I had) to take five points from Lewis, because without a problem for Lewis in the race, I knew Ferrari could do one-two, and (that's) not good enough for me.

"At the start I was able to be third, then (it was) impossible to stay with the Ferraris. In the first two or three laps I was keeping the pace with them, I was hoping the pace was just that.

"Obviously we were taking care of the tyres in the first couple of laps, but when they pushed I was not able to keep the pace. It was the same in China, I was keeping the third position and keeping fingers crossed that one of the Ferraris would have trouble, but there was nothing I could do."

I can't belive what happened!!!
What a dramatic ending for one of the best F1 seasons ever! Yet, Kimi owes Massa big time for playing the crucial tactical role in this GP. Who would have thought that Leiws will experience such problems in the final race!!!

Kimi deserves this championship for driving consistently throughout the season and not giving up until the very last moment. Not to mention his ice-cool nerves that helped him play it right.

I'm so happy that Kimi finally won a championship!!! :D:D:D

Hello :) Thanks for letting me post, I'n new to the union - love F1 have been following it now for 25 years anyhow onto the quali session. Shocked about Kovalanein poor result and Mark Webber looks to be in good form the Red Bull team could challenge BMW for places. Let the lights go out and let's watch the shootout down to the first corner.gospvg

Welcome to the F1PU! :)
Alonso seems to be slacking off, very unlike him. :?.. I don't expect surprises; Massa will probably dominate the race from start to finish followed by Hamilton and Raikkonen, at the end Hamilton will be crowened as the champion.

I think that each team should have its own constructor and not use older engines of the other competing constructors. I'm not in favor of custom F1 cars.

UPDATE

Interlagos circuit smoothed out

Organisers at the Brazilian Grand Prix have revealed that the circuit has been resurfaced which will allow for more grip

Lap times are set to be quicker after the upgrade at Interlagos. The engineer who oversaw the project said: "Drivers will be able to accelerate more in two key segments."

"Additionally, the surface is far smoother now."

The track's pitlane entrance also received an upgrade which allows for improved visibility for drivers as they accelerate up the pit straight.

Alain Prost claims that McLaren erred when they did not make Fernando Alonso their number one driver

The four-time World Champion believes that Ron Dennis always favours one driver within the Woking team and therefore any attempt to create equality is bound to fail.

The former McLaren driver has first-hand knowledge of the inner-workings of the team having driven for them between 1984 and 1989.

And the Frenchman's spat with Ayrton Senna whilst with McLaren is the stuff of F1 folklore.

"I think Ron Dennis is living an involuntary situation that has gone out of his control," Prost told Autosprint.

"His problem, however, is that he's always had a tendency to sympathise more for one of the drivers of his team, for whom his protective attitude emerges. It was like that with Senna, with (Mika) Hakkinen, and now with (Lewis) Hamilton.

"That's the way he is, but this doesn't necessarily end up with technical advantages for his preferred driver. It's simply his way to behave, to communicate his sympathy towards a driver.

And Prost points out that Fernando Alonso has demurred to Dennis' favouritism towards his team-mate.

"I think the reason why Alonso's mood has progressively worsened is that he is not the one at the receiving end of Dennis's sympathies.

"Ron Dennis has made a fundamental error in not having established the hierarchy beforehand. He should have hired Alonso in the role of number one driver in a clear and indisputable way, and have Hamilton racing after having told him he would have been the number two driver."

The 52-year-old also says the Spaniard would have won the title by now - had he been installed as the team's premier driver.

"Probably Alonso would have won the championship this year and, in 2008, Hamilton would have appreciated this situation that would have allowed him to mature with no pressure. And all the problems they have now would have been avoided. By contrast, everything is a lot more complicated now.

"Nowadays I think the future of every F1 team is to have well-defined hierarchies among the drivers. It's sad for the competition, for the sport and for the show, but this is the direction things seem to have taken.

"Alonso has exaggerated a bit with the criticisms and the way he's done it, but everything starts from Dennis's will to always convince his drivers that inside his team there is a situation of perfect technical equality.

"That's something difficult to demonstrate and keep up with at all times, and it can't be restricted to the way the car is prepared.

"There are other aspects: human and psychological elements, which can't possibly end up in a situation of absolute equality. Alonso's problems start from there."

Media speculation suggests that McLaren and its partners have decided to part company with Fernando Alonso

The Spanish daily Marca reports Meredes-Benz's management held a meeting this week and gave the double World Champion a vote of no confidence.

'[Mercedes] reached the conclusion it is in the best interests of the company and the team to let go of the Spaniard at the end of the year,' the Marca's report reads.

'This situation means that all roads for Alonso lead to Renault,' it continued.

Alonso's relations with the Woking constructor have soured through the season. And the newspaper claims sources close to McLaren say Ron Dennis' relationship with Lewis Hamilton is, as most F1 fans are aware, the root of the problem.

It also suggested that Renault had 'promised him a place with the possibility of winning the title and is currently taking steps to find the funds necessary to sign him on a contract equivalent' to his current deal.

The French marque appears to be Alonso's most likely destination as rivals Ferrari have Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa contracted until 2009 and 2010 respectively.
