Since you're still here I'll chip in again.
Most of the choices resulted in what felt like cameo appearances in ME2. Sure, you can argue that fx the Krogan people can be led in two different cultural directions but it still does'nt change the way you play the game one bit.
Did you actually complete the game with a saved and a new Shepard? I did and it was entirely a matter of a different news on the radio, different people telling me (and making me do) pretty much the same things and a few short conversations that that can be summed up as "Hey, remember ME1? So do I!".
So does it change the story? Sort of... Slightly... Does it change the game? Nah.....
I don't see a problem regarding decisions carrying over to ME3 because frankly the way they did between ME1/ME2 was (dare I say it?) rather superficial.
Edit: Seems Bioware agrees with me since they intend to not release ME1 on the ps3.

No, Bioware cannot release ME1 on the PS3 because Microsoft won't allow it. Also, you think the death of not only a major character, but a very popular character won't matter??? The Krogen can go two different directions here. Christina Norman on twitter also confirmed that ME1 decisions will impact ME3...so now not only does the PS3 get a gimped ME2 but a gimped ME3 as well.Actually, they can get two different leaders with not entirely similar (not entirely different for that matter) views. That does'nt actually say much about the Krogan race. Bioware are still free to spin it however they please.
And why do you think Grunt was introduced? Because you won't get Wrex no matter what. You and many others are seriously exxagerating the impact the ME1 decisions had on ME2 and will have on ME3.
Remember Ashley/Kaiden? That major decision resulted in 2 lines of intro dialgoue, a short conversation on one planet and an E-mail..... Huge impact right there....
Edit: And you did'nt answer me. Did you actually try both a saved and a new Shepard? Felt like the same game to me.
Editedit: And saving the Counsil? What a letdown..
Obviously it leads up to creating a super army to fight the Reapers. That's the whole point of keeping Wrex alive, because he's the leader of the Krogan and since you were a good friend of his, he'll help you out. Same with the Rachni. You think they're only going to appear in the first? Obviously saving them had long term implications.
That's two major allies you would be losing out on.
