Tom, I laud you for stepping out and saying what needed to be said. Adding more violence to a game does nothing for innovation. The reactions of both sides aren't lending much to an organized discussion about this, and I am glad that at least one journalist is willing to see this in a balanced way.
It won't be until the end of the game that she becomes the Lara Croft we knew before. I can't see her being Super Lara for half the game and the story retaining its purpose after that. Has to be in the final showdown of the game.
My one major gripe about the game is that weapon stats are not categorized, and as such will generate a two-handed giant hammer that has +50 intelligence on it. It would make more sense that a class-specific weapon type should only generate stats such as Strength and Vitality at random values rather than something a class can't use. Attributes such as Arcane Damage or other enchantments can all still be totally random, but again I feel that primary stats (Strength, Intelligence, Dexterity, etc) should only appear on weapons geared toward certain classes. Wizards with clubs, as the review suggests, doesn't make sense.
Keep letting investors run the show, and all we'll get for \$60 is a software platform that we can play future DLC games on, perhaps for another $10 or $20 each. Did they forget that the game industry was based on...wait for it...FUN? And giving the gamer their money's worth? Developers need to breathe again and be allowed to make things wonderful again.
