@simplytheebest: no wonder you think it's yesterday's news. Nowadays people are rocking at least 60" displays with either a console or a steamlink/nvidia shield.
Bought my 55" Full HD 3D LED TV with Hyper Real Picture Enhancement Engine a year ago and I get the most crisp, crystal clear image I can get on 1080p. It makes the motion look more natural due to it having a 200HZ refresh rate (which is now yesterday's news btw). Hell, it makes PS3 games look current gen.
What I'm saying is, it's not about the resolution, but the picture you're getting. 1080p is still mainstream, and it will stay so for at least the next 1-2 years. Casual people/gamers aside, 4k as of now is for rather privileged people, who are more or less obsessed on achieving the highest quality possible.
@simplytheebest: Like hell it is, so I beg to differ. Just because 1080p is everywhere now, as in smartphones with a tiny a$$ screen, means it's not "full" HD anymore?
If a game/movie/picture is crap, it'll be crap no matter the resolution it's being viewed in. 1080p is more than enough, for me at least.
Back on topic, I think Sony is just afraid that some hacking group might find exploits in PS4 through mods, imho.
Just give the console gamers, hell, any gamers a tiny little (and by little I mean very little) reason and they'll eat each other alive.
"A 4k Console, that can't play 4k videos" - Seriously? Full HD Blu-Ray isn't enough anymore? 3D isn't enough anymore? Everybody suddenly got rich and moved on to buy a 4k TV Set? Have I been living under a rock here?
You're gamers! Be gamers! Stop bragging about: "Duh, Sony this, MS that" and remember why you started gaming in the first place.
It's Kojima all over again. Not that I don't like the new Jamaican sounding Kratos, but them Devs need to stop getting new voice actors for their old characters. Many old people sound like they're in their 30-40s. The only thing that changes, is the way they talk.
