Real reason for the delay: JJ Abrams is suing or threatening a lawsuit because he feels the game is copying one of his TV shows known as "Person of Interest". This is coming from an inside source.

@senjutsu If it lands on the PS4 then the game will end up being worse, not better. How about upgrading your PC instead of getting a PS4? Console games dont mix well with mmorpgs. IN fact for them to make the mechanics work on the consoles, the games usually get dumbed down.

PCs have been consistently one of the best gaming platforms throughout history, they are also backwards compatible and the games found digital (like on steam) are often much cheaper than the console equivalent. Hell just last month they were selling some of the top games for as low as $2.99 as part of a summer sale. Theres no logical reason to not be a PC gamer.

Voxels are a fairly new technology in the world of games. Lets see if its a hit or a miss. If its a hit it can open up a whole new approach to how games are created and played, offering both a new layer of depth but also potentially a cheapened less hand crafted feel.

User generated content is also a plus, but its also a double edged sword.

This is a grand experiment that will either revolutionize how we can look at games and look at voxels as a technology, or it will showcase how some tech just isnt ready for consumption yet.

@Buck_Swaggler Most of what they have done is already achievable. The key here is that they are using Voxels. Its a completely different technology from your usual polygon based 3d assets you see in other games.

With a solid voxel system in place and a Project Spark like visual scripting and building system, its entirely possible to have the community really make quests and assets for the game. Furthermore, its pretty easy for them to generate a world.

So its all possible. This doesnt mean it will feel good though. Often that approach can leave a very lackluster world as a result.

The importance of this however is that if it does succeed, then it can showcase the power of voxels for future game development (at the cost of realism as an art style), and showcase the user created content is a viable design approach (valve is also pushing user generated content as part of their design approach).

@blackace @NoxiousBass Only the landmark version will be free. No word on the actual game, though I would prefer and expect it to either be buy to play or pay to play. Its much better that way for the end user.

@slainta Which will end up causing EU prices to go up. The EU courts are pretty idiotic though, so whatever they pass has a high chance of not being taken seriously, rather, their opinions are not necessarily smart or acceptable. EU is a mess right now in part due to the courts.

In addition to that, Valve, the largest digital distribution platform in the world has already come out and said it wont play ball with that court decision. Few will. That means all the courts did was write a big angry letter with no impact.

Reselling digital copies is just a braindead anti-business move to begin with. Hard to believe that officials can make jokes like that these days.

@Nightdragonist I am primarily a PC gamer as well, but when you look at the bigger picture... the cost will inevitably go up. Games are not just for kids anymore (not that they originally were to begin with). A lot of those kids who had the original nintendo console are about 30-40 years old now, they have money and kids of their own. The average gamer is around 35 years old.

Mix that with the higher cost in development and the higher hardware, gaming as a hobby has to cost more. It really comes down to if the parents will invest in expensive toys (computers) for their kids or not.

@lsdbaby @Shiftfallout You cant read a few paragraphs? Really. I think you cant argue what I posted, otherwise you wouldnt be making up such silly excuses. It is not a long post, its merely stretched down due to the formatting of this website.
Even jr high school kids read longer and heavier chunks of text that this. Seriously, act like an adult.

@Redsyrup @SniperFire17 WRONG. Actually prices have gone UP since retailers have built an industry around used games. There is no "competition". Retailers dont order new copies when they can just pawn off used.

Dont forget games are not owned, they are licensed. Games are software. You buy the medium in which the software is held on, as well as the license to run the said software. Thats where it ends.

Anyone who thinks used games are doing anything good for the industry is living in a fantasy world. Its just not objectively true. The retailer is laughing all the way to the bank for every single entitled consumer they can get to believe that lie.

Finally, you do realize that third party publishers (which make up most of the games you will see released on the consoles) can still enforce their anti-used game stance. What this comes down to is Sony, and now microsoft, leading you to believe that all games for their console will be easily tradable and found used. Thats not the case at all. They intentionally didnt explain the specifics because its better for you, the consumer, to believe what you want to believe.

Every time you buy a current gen game used, when you could have bought it new, you are doing something far worse than piracy. Just remember that.
