Are you high? There are 775 boards that support ddr3.

edit:

dont get me wrong,I think you made the right choice, but at least get the facts right.

RFOMownage
Yeah, I know that there are 775 boards that support DDR3. Was looking at the NForce 700-series, and the only model that supports DDR3 is the 790i. The price wasn't all too much cheaper than the X58 I got due to the sale. So due to that, my other option was a 750i or PQ5, which doesn't support DDR3.

why did you buy 6 GB ddr3 RAM? Isn't 2 or 3 GB ddr3 enough for the i7?strider_ATI
It was a special offer that expired yesterday. The discount wasn't as tremendous as they made it seem to be, but I basically got the 6GB of RAM for $100.

That is true, as that was my original plan. However, I wanted to avoid the LGA775 platform, since I'd be limited in terms of CPU and RAM upgradability a year or two down the line. The way I see it, I can always get a replacement video card any time. But if I took the other path, I'd be stuck with DDR2 ram and current generation CPU's for the rest of my rig's lifetime, and I don't plan to do a full overhaul any time soon.

Monitor and Case fluff aside, it was either between:

x58 mobo + i7 920 + 6GB DDR3 Ram with much more powerful video card, but stuck with current generation ram/cpu in terms of upgradability

vs

PQ5 mobo + E8400 + 4GB DDR2 Ram with less powerful video card, but removed the restriction in terms of ram/cpu upgradability.

No clue if I made the right choice or not, but what's done is done. Still going to be a beast either way......currently typing this out on a 1.83 Core Duo :P. Hopefully my new puppy will be here in a week's time :)

Why would you get a i7 and a HD4670?:| That doesn't make any sense to me...

Sordidus

Are they not compatible or something (Serious question)? But if they are, it's because of the pricing. I wanted something servicible, and the 4670 was one of the cheapest cards that didn't fall into the abysmal performance range. Simply don't have the funds now for anything more expensive, as an upgrade to that card with a considerable performance increase would strike me an extra $40-50.

Just ordered my first non-premade computer ever. Prices aren't nearly as low as those offered in the States, but let me know how this setup fairs please :)

-EVGA X58 3X SLI Gaming Motherboard & 6GB DDR3-1866 RAM ($450)
-Intel Core i7 920 Quad Core Processor LGA1366 2.66GHZ Bloomfield 8MB ($350)
-ASUS ATI Radeon HD4670 512M PCIE2.0 DDR3 2X DVI TV-OUT Retail ($102)
-Corsair TX650W 650W ATX 12V 52A 24PIN ATX Power Supply ($130)
-Samsung SyncMaster 920NW 19IN Widescreen LCD Monitor ($155)
-Samsung Spinpoint T Series HD501LJ 500GB SATA2 7200RPM 8.9MS 16MB ($72)
-LG GH22NS30 Black DVD+RW 22X8X16 DVD-RW 22X6X16 DL 16X/12X 2MB SATA ($36)
-Antec Three Hundred Mini Tower Gaming Case 300 ATX ($65)

Total: $1360 Canadian, so that's about $1214 US.

Had to cut back on the video card, case, and monitor, since I had originally planned to get a PQ5 Pro + E8400 set instead. This X58 mobo (with the ram, it was a package deal) and i7 920 chip turned out to be $350 more expensive.

Any guess as to what sort of FPS I'd get on say, Crysis and other graphical demanding games running at 1440x900?

How much will al this cost?boxofwit
Computer + Monitor after 12% tax = roughly $1500 Canadian dollars Yeah, I know it's possible to get a similar build for a lot cheaper down in the States, but not so much here. :(

Thanks for any tips you guys can provide, greatly appreciated.

Hey guys, quick question that maybe someone could please give a brief reply to:

I was checking out the Intel i7 series processors, and realized that I'd have to get a X58 motherboard as well, since older generation motherboards are apparently not compatible with the i7's. I'm in the process of picking out parts for a new computer, and I'd like to build something that's *relatively* future proof. I know there's no such thing in the computing world, but by that, I mean the ability to do upgrades in the future.

My current computer is of the first generation Core Duo's, and by its architecture, I'm not even able to install more than 2GB of ram. That's the thing I'm trying to avoid this time around.

The simple question is, would it be in my best interest to purchase a new motherboard? Here's a hypothetical scenario I'm thinking right now: If I wanted to install an Intel i7 chip 6 months from now on an NForce 750i mobo....I wouldn't be able to. Or am I completely off-base here? Same deal with the RAM. The NForce 750i doesn't support DDR3 ram. The thing I want with my computer is the ability to upgrade pieces a couple years down the road. I don't want to get something that's basically already obsolete in terms of upgradability.

Thanks for any sort of help given :)

I'm in a rush, so I'll cut it down to the simplest facts you need to know.

Depends what you're using the TV for. Plasma TV's have a much faster response time compared to LCD's (under 0.1 ms for typical plasma, compared to 3-8 ms for LCDs), but have a bad problem with reflection, so if your room has lots of sunlight, that'll be a problem. Plasma's *Can* suffer from burn in, although it's not much of a problem with the plasma's released nowadays.

Also, size is a factor. Plasma's don't come in small panels, so only choice for that is LCD.

Plasma's = better colours. Darker darks, etc.

A ton of differences. If I were you, go down to your local electronics store and ask one of the associates there :)
