@GermanBomber @shingui5 actually, even phones nowadays are able to handle some games that are leveled with the end of PS2 era. pretty soon phones and tables will be doing crazy ps3/xbox 360 level games. its just that games like those are few amongst the sea of crap titles, but they exist.

@udubdawgz @shingui5 @DonMattrick

really? let me oversimplify this for you:

say EA has 100 units of risk to use per year. (yes, i make risk into a unit so its easier to grasp).

imagine that previously each new title they made used up 15 risk units and investing on a new IP used up extra 20.

so they could either make 4 games (60 points) with 2 of them being new IPs (40 points), totaling 100 and using up their risk limit

OR

make 6 games, none being new IPs and have 10 risk points left in the end.

obviously making 6 games that are known franchises would bring in more money, so its was really an easy decision for the board people.

Now imagine that with this new standard (new frostbite) the risk points associated with every new game fell from 15 to 10 and from 20 to 15 for new IPs.

now they can, in theory, still make all those 6 games for the known franchises that will bring money in(60 points) and still make one new IP (25 points) and have some left over.

OR

If they are a bit more daring, make 5 games from known franchises (50 points) and 2 new IPs (50 points).

all of this while keeping the investor bard happy because the easy money with known franchises would still be coming in as usual.

this is a very simplistic breakdown of how this works for you to grasp what he meant.

hope it helped, because this is actually a good piece of news.

@Broodwin i think this is bad news. they should've dropped the price to $5 for the online pass. I mean, you are buying it used for cheaper, so theres no harm in paying $5 for them to maintain servers and (idk if this happens) pass a percentage of that to the devs. if you are buying it second hand for little money, don't be stupid greedy.
Now that they cancelled this, I bet anything that their next big thing will be their DRM and will **** everyone rather than used game buyers

@luqmanr @Hurvl Ha! look at this guy! piracy has ruined him and he doesn't even know!

" For example, the most money I would spend on a game is probably 3-5 dollars. If I think it's very worthwhile I would pay $10 for a game at most. For softwares like photoshop and office i too would pay out $10 at most. "

Some games are worth $10, but you can't really ask for all games to be sold at that price. do you realize how much it takes to make them? most of us actually just want the price tag to fall to $50 ($40 would be amazing).

then you come and say $10 for photoshop?! HA! LUNACY! whats next? $15 for 3Ds Max?

@gregrout @Peter_Desert even if they don't walk away form it(which i dont see them doing), the main point is that the staff being cut has no relevance whatsoever to the big budget titles.

but just to elaborate on what you said: yeah, the mobile sector brings in easy money, but I think maybe the expanded too much expecting every mobile app to bring in money, which is not how things work, thus trimming of mobile staff

@uk_friday why oh why? tell me how cutting some costumer-service and staff from the mobile studio will affect their full fledged console/pc games. if anything, cutting people from mobile sector may be a good thing for us. Maybe EA is figuring out there is not consistency on mobile/free to play crap.

I'm just hoping things get better since the CEO resigned.

what are they doing? a new engine+new environments on top of the cars?

because not too many years ago $50 paid for a full AAA title! think about it, $60 covers the cost of their R&D, trips, contracts with manufacturers, coding, the engine build, the graphical development, sound development, modeling of environment, modeling of cars, lighting creation, new features development, menus, online severs and a few other things. now they ask $50 so they can model and calibrate some new cars(granted there are contracts there too)?

thats just abuse! and i say it as a forza fan that has enjoyed the titles since forza 1

PS: before anyone say that i should just buy what interests me and get over it:

thats EXACTLY what I do, i bought a few cars here and there (no more than $15 in total) and was considering the pass on forza 4, but as an uni student, budget is tight. at $30 i though that if i had the money, it would be a decent investment, but $50? what the hay?!

the main thing i took from this article is “Connected TV represents a major opportunity for gaming on the five-year horizon," Reseburg said. "It’s long-term opportunity"so EA thinks 5 years is long term. i guess they develop all their games in 8 months tops then
