Simple:

If you can afford it, buy a 1080p with at least a 37" screen and a low response time. If you can't afford it and don't mind sitting close buy a 32" 720p as they have dropped in price.

I really struggled with that question too. My Sony Bravia is 26" and is 720p. My Sharp Aquos is 37" and is 1080p. I use both for xbox 360s and PS3s. I would say that there is a huge difference up close and when sitting back to a reasonable relative distance. The Aquos provides an incredible gaming experience and the Bravia so-so in comparison. This is true with Blu-ray movies as well.

I recommend really shopping around and seeing the differences yourself by going to the the big box electronic stores and taking a close look before buying. You can get a really reasonably priced 1080p with a great response time. You don't have to buy a really big one, but don't get anything smaller than 37" if you are buying 1080p.

I disagree with those that claim that 37" is not sufficient to enjoy 1080p. I sit about 8 to 9 feet away for movies and about 6 feet away for gaming. For me I needed price and performance when I bought my Sharp Aquos over the summer (2007). This was the best 1080p I could get for the money. At the time the prices had not dropped enough on the 40 and 42 inch models--especially the ones that had true blacks, dazzling color and fast response times. Contrast is a pretty deceptive measure of how good an HDTV looks. I have seen with my own eyes HDTVs with really high contrast claims just not perform well vs. some that had lower contrast.

Also, watch out for the lower priced models for 1080p. They often skimp on features and performance for gaming.

Size does matter too. If you have a small place and will be sitting relatively close you don't need a 46" or bigger. But if you are going to be sitting back a ways you do need to invest in a bigger screen or you will be throwing your money away.

Lastly, make sure your HDTV has a very capable light/dark adjustment. Many games are way too dark and don't have decent brightness options in-game. A better quality HDTV will allow you adjust this yourself. Further, make sure it gives you true blacks.

That is my two cents....

What I find amazing is that I keep thinking that Sony is under performing. But, then this article makes me realize that they are pushing three platforms each with about a half million in sales. So, that puts Microsoft in third with less than 800 thousand sold, Nintendo with a staggering 2.5 million sold, and Sony with 1.5 million sold. So, I think Sony is still in there. What saves Microsoft is their software sales. Is this because more hardcore gamers buy more next gen games of higher quality for the 360? Microsoft must have a high volume of gamers that buy more games? Nintendo driven by a lot casual buyers (seems too simplistic)? Sony more mixed in there fan base?

Seems to me that each strategy is working, but I am concerned about Wii game quality. Also, PS3 games like Ratchet and Clank are few. I mean it always seems that the xbox version is the best version by far when compared to the PS3...

I was looking through the posts and I notice a lot of threads about the fact that this holiday we are faced with more choices than the book makers werebefore the chariot race in Ben Hur.

I am one of those people that is entirely consumed by every possible platform. However, I find myself mostly divided between games for my 360 and my PC. My kids are caught in a vortex consiting of the DS, Wii and PS3.

Is this a complaint? No! In fact, other than higher than usual credit card bills I am deleriously happy. However, I do have a problem with time. The games out today have two significant features: single and multiplayer. Sure a the campaigns have gotten shorter, but once hooked by a game's multiplayer mode I can find myself blearly eyed hunched over my computer and console at 3:00 A.M.

At this very moment I playing COD4. I have been playing it non-stop since the release. All multiplayer. I haven't even touched the single player. Crysis is on its way and I am afraid to open to the package. Rainbow Six Vegas and World of Conflict sit on my shelf unopened because before COD4 I was playing Team Fortress on the 360 like a mad man.

Worse, I have Soldier of Fortune on its way. Sure it has some questionable reviews, but I gave have my brain cells to previous questionable versions. Kane & Lynch is also going to end up on my PC in a matter of days. I know that it has an unusual multiplayer mode that will tap into my crack like addiction to online shooters. Gears of War for the PC has visuals that I know I want to experience. However, that box sits unopened beside my brand new copy of Ghost Recon 2.

My boys are not in a different place than me. For months their DSs's have been hotly burning through every version of Pokemon you can think of. The Wii has been virtually been left untouched as they tackled the HALO 3 coop campaign. Next Ratchet and Clank for the PS3 ruled the roost, but lay on the floor beaten only to have it's replay value be ignored for the new Simpson's game on the 360.

Now I am faced with Mass Effect rearing it's beautiful head. When will I be able to tackle that brute beauty.

This banner year reminds me of how I felt with the releases of the 360, Wii and PS3. Each time I was consumed by the incredible number new titles I just had to have and try. However, this time it is the games themselves that have taken my bank account by storm.

One thing that I find funny is that I really don't have a clue what will be coming in 2008. Other than Metal Gear Solid what is out there in the must have category.

Unreal Tournament 3 for the PC is also waiting for me I just realized. I am scared, very scared.

Man, Dell really sucks. I had some bad experiences with the three Dells we have owned, inlcuding an XPS laptop, that had a bad motherboard twice, power supply and display. Not even to mention the bad keyboard keys. And technical service, a nightmare. They want you to be a technician. You know how you usually are not supposed to crack open a laptop, but Dell will try to get you to do it and then when you do they will claim you violated your warranty by doing so.

And the length of time it takes to get them on the line, you will suffer the Nine gates of hell prior to getting through to the actual person who is qualified to help you.

[QUOTE="Wesker776"]What price range is this?

For ultra high end, you can't go past Falcon Northwest.
Forerunner-117

Well my preferred budget is around $1000 tbh but if I order from AVADirect, I may either have to make some concessions, or spend a bit over by projected budget.

An earlier post gave this link: http://computershopper.com/reviews/avadirect-gaming-cube-desktop-review.  I checked it out and it is 1800 plus.  But you can make some concessions, but not the processor.  Like get the new GT 8800.  This would be a really great high end PC.  But it does not have upgradeability due to the cramped space of the cube.
So if you go AVAdirect you will have to spend a little more, but it is a lot.
Also, give Digital Storm a go @ digitalstormonline.com.  Call them, look at their forum page.  Check out reseller reviews.  If you call them you can find out exactly what you can get for your money.
Best though you can make a build online and save it and in like 48 hours you get an email of 5 percent off.  Also, make a build and post it on the configuration forum along with a budget amount and what you are looking for and the community will immediately give you advice on components and performance and price.
Also, digital storm will special order anything you like and do all sorts of tweaks.  Just ask them.
I knew nothing about AVAdirect until this thread so thanks.
