Sony is an electronics manufacturer as well as console maker. Part of that includes a huge influence in the HDTV market, somewhere Microsoft is not even present. The idea that Microsoft introduced television first in any way, shape or form is silly.

As the article states, this is a feature coming to their Bravia line of HDTVs as well as their gaming consoles that was already outed in January. I have a feeling the announcement is more related to their electronics division than gaming division, but they may as well implement it on both.
