What does Smash Bros, GTA, Halo, Gears and the likes have in common besides amazing sales? they all appeal to the same crowd. to the casual mainstream male 14 + of age. Wii has sold a lot to hardcore gamers and to casual gamers, mainly who dont enjoy the mainstream violent games, two ends of a spectrum. the hardcore gamers are few in comparsion to everyone else, they are the onces who actually follow the industry to some degree and hang around forums, etc. the other major category is the wii sports, wii play, carnival games crowd and to some degree, mario galaxy etc depending on if they have children etc.
whats lacking though, is the typical console gamer. a guy who wants straight foward "mature" games such halo, gears, gta, etc, a guy who thinks chainsaws, blood, guns, shooting down innocent pedestrians and the like is radical/ and or TOTALLY AWESOME. that guy doesnt play rpgs, he will never play mario galaxy no matter how good it is, nor will he touch games that are not as straightforward as his main preference. they find out about their games through the word of mouth and commercials. wii has a relative lack of those costumers compared to ps3 and 360, both of which have them almost exclusively . the ps3 simply because of its name, 360 because it already has hits such as halo, gears, crackdown, etc.
wii has games that appeal mostly at both ends of the gamer spectrum, not the big chunk in the middle though. smash bros will probably change that. its a game with many recognizable characters beating each other sensless while madness is ensuing all around them. its arguably the best multiplayer experience you can have with friends at your house. in short, it has always filled the criterias of the mainstream gamers, and it will have an impact beying simply selling tons consoles. i know people who bought the gamecube simply because of smash bros, and then later built their GC library around it. i think that smash bros will spur the sales of more traditional mainstream games that have sold pretty poor so far on wii. you could argue that its because 3rd party devs havent really made an effort, but nonetheless. it wont simply be a system seller, it will boost the sales of the games that have been lackluster so far and games like no more heroes will benefit from greatly.
