Personally, I am a little board of playing as a super human. I have really been into games that deliver a meaningful message, and do so through subtle and ordinary occurrences. Games like Prototype 2, Splatterhouse, CoD, Battlefield, God of War, the consistent waves of sports games, AND FREAKING NEVERDEAD have really made the argument of games being a respectful medium for art and gripping story telling a hard one. The super human aspect is great, I do enjoy it, but it is over done. Braid is a COMPLETELY different kind of game then all of the ones mentioned, but it is a great example of what video games CAN be. Tim is ordinary, but broken, which allows for great storytelling... what can you do with a tentacle covered blade arm in the way of narrative? I have yet to experience Mass Effect, but I have great respect for it and believe it also helps deliver that argument alongside Braid. I'm not so sure that developers are afraid of using an "every-man", but they are just recently figuring out how to do so successfully and meaningfully in something other than a survival horror game. Just give the concept more time, we have yet to play The Last of Us ;)
