http://www.africaresource.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=425:loreal-tells-women-of-color-to-take-a-hike&catid=136:race&Itemid=351 Is it racist to have an opinion that non-white people are less attractive? No Is it racist to discriminate on "beauty" when hiring people for the promotion of a COSMETIC product? I dont see any reason why it should. Now you are going to say that it didnt discriminate on beauty but on skin colour, well skin colour is a part of beauty and the company just thinks that white woman are more attractive, their opinion... So can someone tell me where the company got it wrong? I sense cases like these are raised because of insecurity rather than fairness and justice...

Well I would love my wife to be an atheist but that's very difficult to happen cuz I live in pakistan. I can go abroad and find a partner there but I really want to marry a woman of my own language and culture. As long as shez not a burka wearing extremist, I am ok with a muslim wife as I am confident that I will slowly show her the path of rationality.

Now I doubt any woman is going to accept me as an atheist unless I manage to make her fall very deeply for me so I am not gonna be honest about my beliefs. I know selfish but I cant ruin my whole life over it.

A wonderful biologist who thinks his elementary-school philosophy is somehow new and ground-breaking... and should remain a biologist.

foxhound_fox

He himself dubbed his philosophy as "amatuer" in the God delusion.

It's a misunderstanding that dawkins comes off as the height of intellect or as if he has "discovered" some ground breaking idea about life and religion although he does overrate darwin at times. What is so unique about him is his excessive hate towards religion and how blatant he is about it.

For more than a year I havent uninstalled my drivers, I just install them directly and never had a problem. The uninstalling part is just too cumbersome and unneccesary. You only really need to do it when buying a new graphics card. Some people really make PC gaming look alot more complicated than it is.

Language surely didnt naturally evolve as species do. While there certainly was need to have language just like survival is a need in natural selection, how exactly language will form is upto the individuals. Like you dont have any choice in the formation of the heart, you cant modify it in any way in natural selection, it just happens.

I mean look at american english, it certainly didnt "naturally" evolve from british english, it was certainly purposely done. I dont know the reason why but looking at it it seems like english was changed to make more "sense" as in american english spelling and prononciation of words are alot closer than in british english.

1. Common ancestry

But latin still exists, the common ancestor to chimps and humans doesnt...

2. "Perfect" design

:?

Ah language IS "designed" by an intelligent being(s) and that intelligent being is there to guide it through the course of it's evolution.

Evolution on the other hand happens by natural selection and is not designed by an intelligent being.

Just because something evolved doesnt mean that it wasnt designed.

3. Transitional forms

How much different is latin and italian? The bigger the different between species and the bigger the "need" for a transtional fossil.

Hello everyone. I live in pakistan and was born in a fundamentalist muslim family. Until the age of 20 I very firmly believed in the existence of Allah. After that I was exposed to the world of reason and atheists through the internet and then it all started to change. It all started when a deeply dissapointing event in my life made me question the "purpose" of life. Now I am 21 and an atheist.

However I am still a muslim publicly due to social reasons and this is just the beginning of the battle I will have to fight all my life. Even if I leave this country one day there will still be people who will "cut ties" with me for being an apostate and I am still thinking how to approach my life regarding these issues.

Nope. Anyone capable of committing a heinous crime (violent rape, torture, violent murder, serial rape/killing, etc.), is most likely severely mentally ill (regardless if we have found the cause of the issue or not) and despite being responsible for their actions, cannot be put into a regular prison system and should be given treatment. Killing someone as restitution puts us on the level of the criminal and creates a paradox.

A crime of passion is a different story though. Someone who kills someone because they are overcome with emotion, or got a little too drunk, are fully responsible for their actions and worthy of receiving a restitutive stay in a prison, working for the state and repaying the debt to the victims and the community. Revenge is not an excuse. Be the better human being and control yourself.foxhound_fox
I have met people who have murdered their loved ones due to property disputes and people who have gang raped street prostitues and I can tell you that they are perfectly "normal".

You cannot imagine how someone can be "ok" with these things but that doesnt mean that they arent "normal" people.

[QUOTE="itsTolkien_time"]

Gabu, quite frankly you sound like a walking commercial when you say this. You say 135 people have been exonerated, but how many people have been executed and NOT exonerated?

GabuEx

1173 people thus far have been executed since 1976.  That puts the rate of number sentenced to death to number exonerated at around 10%.  How many of those 1173 were innocent, we will never know - there is no real incentive beyond closure for the family of the one executed to further investigate the innocence of one who was already executed.  We do know that the number is greater than zero, however.

My point with parroting that number repeatedly is to drive home the point that it's not even an insignificant number - one out of every ten sentenced to death were later exonerated.  That precise question must be asked, then: indeed, how many more were wrongly charged and were not exonerated?  How many were put to death before a case could be made for their innocence?  And how can a justice system possibly be justified as conscionable if it leads to even one innocent person being placed in danger of being murdered by the state, let alone 10% of all people sentenced to death?

One of the most fundamental human rights in existence is the right to a presumption of innocence.  Even after a person is convicted of a crime, it is clear that we cannot and must not assume that that person is guaranteed to be guilty such that we can now do whatever we want with him or her.  A punishment ought to serve two and only two purposes: the deterrence of those who might otherwise commit a similar crime, and the protection of society from the one being punished.  Anything beyond that has exited the realm of justice and has entered the realm of vengeance - and vengeance is something on which nothing in the world should be based, let alone a country's judicial system.  It reminds me of that one lady who, in response to a person wrongly charged with murder, declared that she did not even care if an innocent person is killed - she just wanted someone, anyone to pay for what happened.  I fear that that mentality is all too pervasive in the minds of those who see nothing wrong with the death penalty - I can't count the number of times I've heard sentiments along the lines of, "He killed someone, so now he doesn't deserve to live!"

So why have any criminal law at all since innocents are inevitably going to be punished due to the imperfection of the system??

Do you also oppose the system of stamping people as sex offenders? You do know that people end up having it having done nothing? And it ruins your whole life being a registered sex offender. The list of crimes can just go on so I ask you, why do you support any judicial system regarding criminal law at all??

As for the topic, why is it so much more worse to have an innocent killed rather than having him in lifetime punishment? Infact the latter is worse in my opinion cuz the mental stress and frustration caused by having to see your whole life wasted for something you didnt do will be terrible indeed. With death penalty you wouldnt be "there" to know how you were wronged.

What are the chances that an innocent will be able to "prove" his innocence and get out of his lifetime exile?

It is human nature to seek revenge, it's a built in mechanism and by all standards "equal revenge" is justice. If law doesnt provide man with revenge in matters as serious as murder and rape then you can be assured that many would go out of their ways to seek it some other way which could be worse for society. Those people who oppose revenge can simply forgive crimes done to them or their loved ones.

To oppose the death penalty altogether because innocents are going to get caught here and there is just not the way to go, the universe is not perfect and will never be. I could say that lets genocide the whole earth cuz "innocents" are going to be born with diseases and disabilities and it's not fair so lets just end life altogether.
