@bdrtfm: You're correct when it comes to 3rd party titles skipping Xbox as far as there being numerous factors involved besides just sales numbers. Xbox is not popular at all in many regions - therefore games made by devs based in those regions are more likely to skip Xbox. Xbox Series S is holding Series X back, but really only for AAA titles. As far as indies or lower-budget AA titles go, the Series S shouldn't be much of a hinderance.

As far as the more sales = more 3rd party support argument goes, yes I agree with you that whether Sony broke records this quarter or not, that it would likely have little to no impact on their 3rd party support as they are the market leader. What I was getting at is there is a HUGE difference in being the market leader with 30 million consoles sold as opposed to down the road a couple years where they're still the market leader but are at 100 million consoles sold. Sony will get additional 3rd party support from say pubswho traditionally only release their titles on PC for example. But that additional 70 million consoles sold will no doubt increase the amount of 3rd party exclusives PS5 receives over the generation.

@bdrtfm: LOL! Wrong again there bucko. Do you know why there are hundreds of 3rd party titles on PS4 & PS5 that are NOT on Xbox? It's primarily because PS4 and PS5 combined sales are over 150 million units to Xbox One/Series S/X sales of about 70 million. It's not rocket science, it's ALWAYS how it's worked since the NES days.

Nothing will stop PS5 this generation. I'll end up selling more systems than PS4 and possibly threaten PS2's record. We're on the verge of a (rumored) spectacular PlayStation showcase event in May where a TON of stuff will be revealed, Final Fantasy XVI is right around the corner Spider-Man 2 will be HUGE, PSVR2 will get a price cut and more AAA games. The DualSense is just a flat out better, more technically advanced controller and has some really cool implementation in some games. PlayStation is like the full theatre, surround sound, VR experience. Xbox is like Netflix, Switch (other than 1st party titles) is like straight-to-DVD.

@bdrtfm: Its not "meaningless" if you own a PS5. More system sales = more 3rd party support, including more 3rd party exclusives. Of course more sales matter.

Why Elden Ring Should NOT Be GOTY

I’m one of the 17+ million players who bought Elden Ring. Digitally on Xbox and on disc on PS5. I’ve spent roughly 15 or 20 hours across both versions, trying out multiple character classes, melee focused, magic focused etc. The game is many things. It’s beautiful to look at, some of the enemy and boss designs are terrifying, the landscapes and vistas are amazing. The story? Not the best honestly. The dialogue? Again, not anywhere near a Naughty Dog or Rockstar game. But my biggest gripe is that it’s just NOT FUN! Why? Because it’s just too damn HARD for the majority of gamers.

I’m probably going to show my age here, but I feel it’s important for context. I’ve grown up pretty much from the very beginning of this industry. I’ve lived though every console generation since the Atari 2600. A common thread amongst all console generations is the games that sell the best are first and foremost FUN to play! Yes we appreciate a challenge as well, however not many people enjoy punishingly, cheaply difficult games. I often wonder, out of those 17+ million copies of Elden Ring sold, how many were physical copies? And how many of those were traded into GameStop or pawn shops within a week of purchase?

I personally feel Geoff Keighley and the VGA’s gave the GOTY to Elden Ring to appease PlayStation, Xbox and PC gamers so everyone goes home happy type thing. Go back to 2018, God of War won the GOTY even though everyone else outside of PlayStation thought Red Dead Redemption 2 should’ve won.

We all know that if Zelda Tears of the Kingdom releases in 2023, that Nintendo will be taking home GOTY regardless of how great FF16, Starfield, Spider-Man 2, etc are.

@blaznwiipspman1: Game Pass was born out of failure, not innovation. The Xbox One launch was disastrous to the brand. PS4 absolutely CRUSHED XB1 by almost triple the worldwide sales and their exclusives won more awards than any publisher's titles in the history of gaming. Sony also had PS VR and it was the market-leading VR headset for quite a long time as well. M$ were scrambling, so naturally they pivoted into becoming a glorified game rental service. After all they weren't selling a lot of copies of their 1st party titles outside of Halo, Gears and Forza, and the ratio of sales on multiplatform titles was roughly 70% PS to 30% Xbox. Game Pass has been a loss leader for them ever since, it hasn't actually turned a profit, subs have stagnated, thus they ALSO have to increase the price of their titles. Look for hardware cost increases and Xbox Live Gold & Game Pass increases shortly as well. And Microsoft, a TRILLION dollar company, have NEVER been the "victim" of anything lol!
