@wezkilla @Kryptonbornson Well actually a CDPR said in an interview with Gamespot at E3 that the store released copies had DRM, while the steam and GOG release didn't. The DRM free versions weren't the ones that got pirated. The retail copy was. Which just goes to prove the DRM doesn't mean shit, people will pirate what they will pirate and CDPR lead by example by providing better service to their customers by far than any other studio out there.

@Zloth2 @sabresieben Something people always overlook as well are used game sales. A developer doesn't know if someone buys the game second hand because they don't get money for it. So even though they say they've sold 4 million copies and 4.5 have been pirated, millions more people still play the game but buy it second hand. And many of these people then pirate the game later instead of buying something they've already paid for in the past.

@Zloth2 @Reuwsaat Well anything we say about just how many went and bought it is purely speculation on our part because there's no way to tell. Could be lots of them went and bought it, could be that almost none of them did. Of course people take advantage of being able to pirate things and that is, of course, wrong. I don't condone theft. But making someone pay upwards of £30 for a new game when it might suck is just as bad in my opinion.

@ji99saw @Reuwsaat How do you know those people didn't pirate it? The figures say 4million have bought it and 4.5 million have pirated it. But it's not like you buy it and tick a box that says "I stole this and played it before I went and bought it." Because that would be ridiculous. If there was some way to see who pirated it and then bought it after then I honestly believe those figures would be different.

@ji99saw What is it with people comparing piracy to stealing ridiculously expensive cars? Piracy isn't OK when people profit from it who shouldn't like people who sold pirate tapes and DVD's before the internet became a massive thing. But the fact is that internet piracy isn't the same animal at all. I can see where you think that people who pirate shouldn't get to enjoy it because they didn't pay for it and yeah, that's true. **** those guys who pirate it, enjoy it and never pay for it. But **** the developers who want me to pay for a campaign that lasts 15 hours max, with poor or no multiplayer and software which means I can't play unless i'm connected to the internet. They don't deserve my money.

At the end of the day if the game is worth buying, most people will buy it. If it's not, they won't. I've pirated games in the past, and movies, and music. There are few people who can honestly say they've never had anything illegal. But whenever I come across one of those things that is genuinely worth money, I go and buy it as soon as I can. But why should I pay retail price for a game that really isn't worth the money? TW2 is like £30 at the moment from most places. Worth buying. The Game of Thrones game is the same price, but in my opinion it isn't worth buying. Just because it's been put out there by a developer and backed by a publisher doesn't mean it's worth the money they want for it. If you went to the cinema and sat for 2 hours through a movie that sucked wouldn't you want your money back?

@famekiller Yeah except a maserati is an expensive sports car and a video isn't so that's kind of irrelevant. I can't crash a game into a car full of people and kill them.

I'm not condoning piracy in the sense that people should just steal things and never pay for them, and I didn't say that in my comment so clearly you didn't read it very well. My point was that piracy is a problem that isn't going to go away. And no amount of court cases and DRM is going to change that. If a game is good, people will buy it. If people pirate that game and like it, they might buy it, they might not. But those who don't wouldn't have bought it anyway. And even with a part time job there are tons of new titles coming out all the time so unless all you do is play games, students still won't have the money. I never implied that the world owed me anything. I buy my video games as do most people. Piracy isn't "rampant". It's not taking away from developers. It's attitudes like YOURS that have developers like Ubisoft and Blizzard ruining products that people pay for with stupid DRM software that just gets cracked anyway.

The same argument that has been raging in the music industry for years is happening in the games industry now. Every illegal download is not indicative of a sale. In fact with regards to music without P2P sharing most bands would be half as popular as they are. And when people find music they like they go and buy albums or pay to see the band in concert or buy their merchandise, whereas if they'd never pirated the songs in the first place, they wouldn't have bothered with the band.

Developers blame piracy on their games failing when really their games fail because the content isn't up to scratch. They pour funds into stopping piracy which could be spent on enhancing the current user experience or providing additional content.
