Deus Ex 1 and 2 are also worth playing, although they lean more to the FPS side.kdawg88Melee combat specialty is quite possible and a fair amount of fun though it makes the game unnecessarily hard. Part of the fun in that case though.

Wait for Torchlight 2 in the Spring, it's set to have considerably more customization than the original though the original is well worth the money.
EVE features an easily accessable free 14 day trial offer so why not try it for yourself.
I've played EVE for a few months now though I tried it in trial awhile back. It's a relatively difficult game, I tried City of Heroes recently again and found that game incredibly easy by comparison.
EVE is a sandbox game which means it differs radically from most other MMOs out there. It has a extremely laissez-faire economy that is almost completely player driven. You want a Megathron? (Gallente Battleship) You need to either find a place where someone is selling it or build it yourself. Every item you have was at one point mined and built by a player or multiple players. It gives the game a very realistic feel.
Contrary to popular belief, travel doesn't take that long as long as you ignore the autopilot button. THe autopilot warps you to within 15km of a stargate and then goes on manual to the gate, some ships are very fast at sublight speeds like certain frigates, interceptors among othersp; others like freighters and battleships have bother slow warp speeds and sublight speeds, so they take a bit to get anywhere.
There are a lot of options in EVE, which is where much of the newbie unfriendliness comes from. You can be a miner, a hauler, a manufacturer, a courier, a trader, a mercenary, a soldier in an alliance of player corporations fighting for territory and so many more. You can even commit acts of piracy and almost certainly will be pirated at least once. Evne "High Security" space isn't safe, it's inhabited by CONCORD police units who are there to obliterate offenders but they may not be fast enough to the scene or kill the offender fast enough (Some guys can tank them for a bit but all must die in the end when attacked by concord or it's an exploit and thus bannable) to save you. There are also low security systems that have no CONCORD ships except for the defensive guns at the gates. Then there's the wild frontier, Null Security or 0.0, this is as hardcore as it gets, Battleship sized and bigger NPC pirates (which exist in less threatening forms in high and low sec systems) not to mention roving pirates and the massive player run alliances that battle for territory, most of which will kill you on sight if you aren't one of their own.
That's whyyou get some friends, a posse you can rely on to at least do your jobs and whom you're reasonably sure won't stab you in the back.
