[QUOTE="Deiradinn"]

It's not officially over yet but these are the numbers as of right now for this generation of consoles, the 7th.

1. Wii - 99.8 Million
2. PS3 - 78.2
3. 360 - 77.9
http://www.vgchartz.com/ - updated weekly

The PS3 just surpassed the 360 the week before E3 and has steadily kept moving ahead of it over the last month. Whether you like it or not, Nintendo won this generation. You may not like family friendly games, waggle tech, or 1st person heavy development, but you can't argue with the numbers. The Wii also had the lowest fail rate, leading to longer lives of the hardware. The 360 and PS3 sales could be inflated by the sheer numbers of RROD or YLOD consumers who had to buy a new system instead of repairing or sending it in.

The overall leader is Nintendo with 3 console war wins. It won the 8-bit era, the 16 bit era, and the 7th generation. (6x system war winner if you count handheld)
Sony has won two console wars, the 5th and 6th with the Playstation 1 & 2. Sony has never place 3rd.
Microsoft has never won a console war. The Xbox beat the Gamecube for 2nd place in the 6th war by 2.3m
(The 360 is the 9th best selling console of all time)

Nintendo has won by a landslide, will win the third, all the handheld wars. The 3DS/PSvita is the third.

The best selling console of all time is the PS2 with 150 million hardware sales.
The best selling handheld and overall gaming device of all time is the Nintendo DS, with 153 million hardware sales.

Top game sales in history.
1. Wii Sports - 81.3m
2. Super Mario Bros. (NES) - 40.2m
3. Mario Kart Wii - 33.8m
4. Wii Sports Resort - 31.7m
5. Pokemon Red/Green/Blue (GB) - 31.3m
The top 15 global game sales are all Nintendo games.

Personally, I've always enjoyed all brands and games. It usually was a game that sold a system to me. One thing that will always remain is my adoration for Nintendo. You don't always have to M-rated content to be "cool". I'm 29 and still love Nintendo, as well as my 7 year old son. That being said, I have played a ton of Playstation, all of them. It's my favorite brand for gaming at this time, but I still enjoyed what Microsoft had to offer. I bought the Xbox for Fable, the 360 for Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey but loved and played a lot of 360 games as well. Gamerscore of over 40K.

I try not to be a fanboy at all but with this next generation about to hit I'll probably be a PS4/Wii U player. The only reason I might get a XB1 is for a third party exclusive like Lost Odyssey 2, or Blue Dragon 2. Huge fan of Hironobu Sakaguchi. I always have to have a Nintendo console, it's just a have to for me and my family. TLOZ, Mario, DK, Metroid, SSB... I always enjoy these titles.

I hope you enjoyed this post, took me a little bit to make it. If I had any typos or errors plz let me know.

1st not lvl 10

2ndThose numbers include PS2 sales

3rd Vgvharts lol

The only numbers that count are the offcial numbers released from Sony, MS and Nintendo and right now the Wii is 1st, 360 2nd and PS3 3rd. Until Sony comes out with numbers that have them ahead of the 360 it's still in last place.

Umm, did you watch E3? They officially stated that the PS3 surpassed the 360 in sales live. Also, I apologize that I'm not level 10, but I'm sure as hell qualified to post. I'm not a crazy fanboy looking for attention. The PS2 sales are part of the system war history, why would I exclude them? Like I've stated before, I do not believe these numbers are off. They may not be perfect but I do not see the placement being any different when it's over. I will update numbers accordingly if/when I find a site that's better. The criticism of vgchartz is a bit naive though.

[QUOTE="rjdofu"] lolvgchartz is an obligatory response for someone who use vgchartz as their main source of argument. That means their entire argument is rubbish.

As for your question, I also think it has jackshit in term of practical consequences. Sales number means very little when there're way too many other factors that determine a company status: cost vs price, software sales, other financial incomes other than hardware sales (XBL/PS+ for example), etc. It means even less to gamers. It was shown in history that having a sky rocketed budget doesn't make a game automatically great; while many great quality titles still come from low budget and talented devs.

If there's someone who "lost" last gen, it's Sony, since the PS3 is obviously a downgrade from the PS2 legacy. That happens due to the fact that MS has stepped up the game with the 360, as well as many other factors as mentioned above. People only care about sales here, because this is SW.

I guess I've not been on the forums enough to see where actual research data is lol'd at. Cynical nature of gamers. I wasn't making an argument though, not at all. These are just facts, and my own personal experience peppered in. It's just kind of strange that people can't take data seriously. This isn't some crappy website. It's a great research site but alright. I never said they're losers. Microsoft offers some great gaming but their new methods and ideals are way off balance. I just wanted to make a post with all the numbers/data to show who have "won" the most and things like that. It was never meant to be this vs that. As you can tell I've played my fair share of everything since 1988. lolgzchartz is about the dumbest thing I've heard of on a gaming forum/website. Sales are sales, no reason for people to be getting defensive lol.

There is no fvcking fact to vgchartz, great research site my ass, the number are made up on the go with no legit source to back it up, wtf man? A gamer who play as much as you do ought to know basic shit like that :|.

Okay, if it's a bad research site then give a good one with better data and I'll update the stats accordingly. The methodology looks about as sincere as you can get and the numbers cannot be that far off. Does anyone actually doubt the numbers like a conspiracy? This would make more sense if I was making a post saying "this is better than that", but I'm not. Also, that only applies to the ongoing current gen sales, the historical sales should fairly concrete by now. So 3/4 of the post would be perfectly fine even if these numbers are in error with the ongoing sales.

i don't even think that is the important part of the argument.

the important part for me is so what?

this is the same thing i have been trying to get across about the ps3 being in last for the last  7 years.

what does it  have to do with gaming and the quality of the titles?

everyone has 3rd party support so the entire reason for the importance of sales is meaningless because there is no real world problems associated with where you come in.

i'm worried about practical consequences not some baby ass emotional aspect.

Is there a point to your post? This board is for "system wars", and I gave a brief glimpse of it overall. If you don't take it seriously then I fail to see a reason for you to even post a reply.

I wanted to create a raw/historical perspective of the console wars with a twist of my own personal feelings. If people get defensive, that are Microsoft fans, they shouldn't because if they have fun with their console and don't want to give up their gamerscore then more power to them. The quality of the titles and the sales speak to the growing evolution of innovation and the ease of use of certain games.

Nintendo is the real loser of the 3 when you consider where they are now and where they're headed compared to the other 2.

clr84651

I remember seeing that statement when the Gamecube didn't sell as well as the Xbox.

The Wii U has sold over 13m consoles already and the 3DS is selling like crazy now... Nintendo is just fine. They've been around long enough to know their IPs are the best selling of all time and they're always evolving to the market. It's one company I would never worry about.

The PS4 was made with developers in mind, they learned from past mistakes so this actually makes no sense. Try to compare a high profile PS3 exclusive to a 360 exclusive and it's not even a competition. The only real difference I noticed is load times on 360 and that comes from installing the disc because the 360 is do damn loud.

Third party games will run better on PS4, even Jact Trenton went as far as saying that in an interview with Geogg Knightley.

Online requirement, no renting, no borrowing, pirvacy concerns, drm, used games unclarified... I'm not at all worried about Playstation. Xbox One is a terrible mess and most people know it and will not adhere and buy a console just for one game they'll be tired of in a month or so.
