but any producer worth their weight in salt knows that even the best midi programmer on earth cant capture the expressiveness of a good musician

whoozwah

true, but they can come close enough to fool the average non-audiophile/musician. MIDI is expressive in it's own way. Read up on the EASTWEST series of soft synths, particularly the orchestra ones. I think you'd be suprised as to how good MIDI can sound.

heh, ive been using cubase and sampletank 2 for a while, and I'm familiar the joys of multisampling so Ive got some serious respect for MIDI :) Its apples and oranges in the end, they both have their pro's and cons.

As Ive said before though, onboard midi modules are generally pretty weak in order to avoid hogging the cpu. Nothing wrong with a bit of synth action, but if ninty want a violin, Id love it if they used a real one.

midi is not a poor quality form of recording. In fact it has nothing to do with how a recording sounds. midi is a form of recording theNOTES played, and not theSOUNDS triggered. Midi can control everything from record samples to anolog sythesizers. The problem the poster is truly finding is the quality of VST intruments, VST effects, samples, and/or digital sythesizers Nintendo is choosing. I just wanted to make it clear that the problem is not midi. It is a tool for digital music arrangement, and a highy useful one at that.

Ah yes, someone who knows their way around a sequencer. Thank you comrade. As monmartre has said, MIDI is just a method of recording EVENTS into a computer that can then be interpreted with soft-synths, or as monmartre says "VSTs". In actuality, most "real music" is recorded using a MIDI interface(a keyboard controller in most cases), track per track. Each track is given volume, velocity, pitch, quantinization adjustments and enhancements and then when the tracks are ready to go, each track is patched into it's own soft-synth, which in most cases is a set of real intstruments that have been sampled multiple times at multiple velocities, pitches etc etc to simulate real musicians playing. After that is done, the tracks are equalized, mixed and mastered. Voila! MIDI has set the groundwork to Sephiroth's theme...

i disagree. the problem with midi, as you said, is that you need decent instruments to play it on. Anyone that has produced music using a computer understands the great amount of computing power needed to run decent vsts + vstis in realtime. Console makers have gotten around this by using synths that dont have a great impact on cpu. This means that while the songs can be played in realtime, the sound quality has to be so low as to not interfere with gameplay. You're better off prerecording/prerendering the music using higher quality production tools.

So yeah, when youre talking wii, using midi does mean a reduction in sound quality. Not because midi sucks but because the midi module in the wii doesnt make particularly good sound. Im yet to see an onboard midi controller on any system with decent effects

[QUOTE="Evolving_Jesus"]it really bothered me that Zelda TP was all MIDI Music but now just playing Metroid 3, im getting insulted that nintendo wants to force feed us crappy MIDI Music on there big games. Its time nintendo grows up! that "Human Voice" MIDI sound is discussing.Superzone

Are you crazy!?!? Zelda TP sounded fantastic!! I don't care if it's midi or not, the soundtrack was brilliant! And Metroid Prime 3 sounds bad!? Don't even start BS like that. Corruption's soundtrack is one of the best I've ever heard.

christ, you just dont get it do you? The OP isnt saying the music was bad, just the medium that they produced it on was crap. If you play the same music through real instruments it will sound ten times better. Midi just cant compete with real music.

midi is a sequence of notes played by a synth on your computer.

the midi synths used by each sound processor are different. The songs can sound very different depending on what machine they are played on

i agree with the OP

midi music can only ever reach a "satisfactory" level.

to get truly beautiful in game music it needs to be played live and recorded. Im well sick of nintendo continuing to use midi in their big releases.

Has anyone imported this yet? I heard it has an english language option

If so,

Whats it like?

How are you coping with the new main characters?

Will fans of the series be pleased with it?

I loved the other two games and have plans to import this one. I live in Oz and theres still no word on whether or not this game will be released here.
