The standard for achieving AAA status was a lot harder back then, relative to the standards of the time period, of course. Now big name games can waltz in and steal awaythe AAA title no problem.

For example, Metal Gear Solid 1 received an AA score, but it was much more ahead of its time in comparison to Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, which received an AAAA. Metal Gear Solid 1 was novel in 1998.
