I'm not really sold on the idea that developers or gamers who are of the XY variety have a problem with girls in games. Samus is iconic, as well as Lara Croft. I personally always rocked with Jill Valentine in the first Resident Evil over Chris Redfield. In fact, I often find female characters in games to be among the coolest characters! Morigan, Nina, Sheva, Claire.
I would most certainly embrace more female developers and characters. Now if only we can address this MUST be a white protagonist thing..........

@Taffelost Ridicoulous. We are in which generation now? You never have and never will see a bunch of hoopla nor advertising for gaming pc's because it is the more "esoteric" (see: expensive) sector of gaming. Furthermore, it has already been proven that when new consoles release, there is an actual coinciding positive economic spike! Gaming (for most) is a past time and the constent payouts to upgrade aren't on many people's to do list. True it's not a must to do so, but the entry point is substantially higher. While some titles may cost less, tell me how many titles would you have to buy before it evens out another $600-$1000 difference of buying that PC over the console?

@gstealer You're absolutely right. For example, there was a forum I visited discussing whether if The Old Republic is worth developing on console. The PC world was irate saying it absolutely should not, but nothing they used as reason amounted to anything more than being able to say "nyah nyah! We have it on PC and you don't!". Is that a realistic or mature reason to state to the publisher/developer why they shouldn't extend the market and seek more profit? If the title is not as good for console as it is for PC, how on earth does that hurt a PC gamer? As you stated, some people are just natural douches.
I see many posters are mentioning the RROD and overlooking a very significant fact: MS is an American company known for software, not hardware. You speak about Sony's PS3 nearly being a failure? Ridiculous! Try to remember which company thought it was a "good" idea to cut corners and mass produce poor quality and ended up having to invest BILLIONS to compensate for that stupid American business model tactic. Yes, the PS3 did cost more. But remember that things like wifi and HDMI were eventually added to later models of the 360. And many of the "new" sales of the 360 were actually people buying it again because 1 they got tired of the system failures and 2 they wanted to take advantage of the "new" HDMI and wifi capabilities. So those sales numbers most certainly carry an asterisk.
All Sony would have to do is use a marketing campaign saying good things are worth waiting for or you can end up with a RROD (which isn't slander because slander has to false).
