R.E. 4 is the only game I liked and seriously enjoyed in this list.  The others are mediocre.  SMB is only good if the compitition is good and that gets old.  Of coure R.E. 4 gets old after a few play throughs, but still fun.

What a rip!  It's just a ps2.  I'll drop white paint on mine and sell it for $1001.00 on ebay...

You should be able to hear if the laser mechanism moving back and fourth.  You can also try the machine on its side and also upside down.  I would recomend putting the case on for these.  The hair you found inside the dvd area may have broke something and or their is more in there.  In that case, either a new machine is in order or spare parts.  You may be able to get a cheap spare dvd drive for you machine.  I do not know if anyone sells spare parts for ps2's or not.

The upside down method is anti-gravity and if the hair is clogging something up.  That may well loosen things up a bit.

This white ps2 is a version 5/6 machine which makes it quite abit newer than the original production models.

Well you are using the same faq I used to fix my machine.  By the way your machine is a Version 4.  It has one of two bios chips if interested, but un-important unless putting in a mod chip.  I would say I use the same machine as you and if your talking about those tiny screws that hold the plastic casing down on the dvd drive.  Just square them up and they should fit back in relatively well.  In all accounts the machine should work again.  Try everything with the main case cover off to get more air into the machine and whatch the how the dvd drive reacts.  Is the laser eye mechanism moving freely on the metal pins, or is it sticking.

You did not say what model number though.

Anyways, what I would do is turn the plastic gear until the laser mechanism drops all the way.  Then put the drive back together and the case back on.  You do not need to srew everything together only the dvd drive need to be screwed into place so it does not move on you.  I would then take a ps-one game and a silver back ps2 game and run those.  Also the ps2 has a self diagnosis check system.  It's hidden in the options of the the bios screen.  I would run that once and see what it says.  The ps-one (psx) games and silver backs ps2 games are the easiest for ps2 lasers to read.  After they work, go onto the blue backs and the dvd's.

After each successful try, turn the gear to find the sweet spot where everything works well again.  By the way does everything sound like it's running o.k.  Is the fan running well.

What's the model number?  You can find out the version and see if it's worth the trouble.  Is it a eight screw or a ten screw case?  Did you put the DVD drive back together each time?  Also did you mark the original spot?  The plastic gear only moves one direction.  Do not mess with the screw that connects the gear to the ps2.  Lastly, check the dvd lens and see if there is a scratch on it.

Google a faq on disc read error for the ps2.  Read the above thread on this forum that relates to the error.  It's an easy fix.  I doubt the guy with the 3 broken ps2's are really  broken.  Give the fix a try.  I'll bet at least two of the three work.

Seeing how no one has mentioned a sports title.  I will.  Tiger Woods 2002.  That is my favorite title for the ps2 and was the only reason for having a ps2.

If not.  I did get Omnisha and found that to be a nice game.  It's in the same direction as R.E. 4 except with a sword.
