Sony never asked for Heavy Rain 2, says David Cage
Quantic Dream boss says Sony never pushed developer to make sequel to 2010 thriller, company has "total freedom" with Beyond: Two Souls.
Quantic Dream's 2010 PlayStation 3-exclusive thriller Heavy Rain won warm reviews and sold more than 2 million copies, but publisher Sony never asked for a sequel. Asked by Gamasutra about how much freedom Sony afforded Quantic Dream to pursue their creative vision with its new game Beyond: Two Souls, Cage was clear that Sony has not interfered with that game, and never asked for Heavy Rain 2.
"Total freedom. Total freedom. No constraint in anything," he said. "Many publishers, after the success of Heavy Rain, would have said, 'Well, you need to do Heavy Rain 2. And do what you want, but it's going to be called Heavy Rain 2.' And we never had this conversation with Sony. They just asked me, 'What's next? What do you want to do?' 'Well, I have this idea, what do you think?' 'Yeah. It looks great!'"
Speaking about his current project, Beyond: Two Souls, Cage said the game could not be made without "complete freedom," something he said Sony is readily providing him and his team.
Cage has had lots to say about the industry recently. In the span of the past two months, Cage has called for an Apocalypse Now-like shooter, said the industry will die without innovation, and claimed the business needs to "grow up."
