Wii U Basic falls to $240 at Target

North American retailer Target is currently selling the 8GB Wii U Basic model for $240, a markdown of 20 percent from the launch price of $300. The price drop was first spotted by Nintendo Everything.

Other big-box US retailers have not followed suit, as Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and GameStop have stuck with a $300 price point for the 8GB model. Amazon is offering the system for $280.

No such price cut was made for the 32GB Wii U Deluxe model, which continues to sell for $350 at Target and elsewhere.

Target's Wii U price cut follows multiple markdowns at United Kingdom supermarket Asda. At one point, the Wii U Basic model was going for £149 at the retailer, though the price has been bumped back up to £199.

The Wii U has struggled since launch, selling 3.45 million units worldwide and reportedly only 55,000 systems in the United States during April. Nintendo has apologized for a lack of software, saying this will be corrected beginning in August with the release of Pikmin 3.
