Pachter: Wii U April US sales hit 55,000

Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter says Wii U sales in US down 19 percent from March.

The Wii U's already slow sales pace didn't get any better in the April, according to data from Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter.

Ahead of this week's NPD report, Pachter released to GameSpot sister site CNET sales estimates of 55,000 units in the US for the month, down 19 percent compared to March. The original Wii again outperformed its successor, selling 75,000 units during the period, Pachter said.

The Wii U has officially sold 3.45 million units worldwide as of March 31. Nintendo has attributed the platform's slow adoption rate to a lack of major titles and marketing failing to communicate the novelty of the system.

Nintendo plans to spark system sales by launching key first-party titles on a more regular basis moving forward, beginning with Pikmin 3 in August. The company also aims to reduce manufacturing costs to make the Wii U profitable.

Concerning competitors Microsoft and Sony, Pachter's data today shows that the Xbox 360 was again the market leader, selling 205,000 units in the month. The PlayStation 3 moved 165,000 units in the period, according to Pachter.

The 3DS was a bright spot for Nintendo in April, with sales jumping 46 percent year-over-year to 185,000 units, Pachter said. The PlayStation Vita, on the other hand, declined 56 percent compared to last year, selling 30,000 units in the month, according to Pachter.

Pachter's data is based on retailer checks and does not necessarily accurately reflect true sales information.

Next to no marketing and no games. My brother thought the Wii U was just some sort of add on like the Wii Fit. Come on Nintendo, you can do better than this! Don't go the way of Sega

I don't blame maketing to communicate their supposed novelty, because don't have novelty at all.Is just a slightly more powerful Wii new model with a weird control.

People rip the Wii U with it's strange controller but people get a brain and realize most of you every single day are using smart phones and tablets for the same damn simple things ?  Oh and if you are all excited about the PS4 LOLOLOLOLOL .... the controller for the PS4 has a backside touch screen .... WTH LOLOLOL ... that sounds like more fail than the Wii U controller !

Oh and before you judge the Wii U and it's controller try using the system somewhere .... geezus ...

Once some good titles get out, like the newest Zeldas, I bet the sales get up. The problem right now is the lack of good titles indeed, and no, Pikmin is not one of them. PS4 will obviously rock because many popular game series will definitely go for it.

Just make more games and it'll be a-okay = v = )b

look at all these comments, this has been going on since yesterday Gamespot really need to police these things better

why these guys are getting so caught up about a machine is beyond me, it's just a lump of plastic that you use to play games, which one you play isn't important, it's the games that are important

all that matters is having fun and it people like these trolls that are giving true gamers a bad name

WiiU is a huge waste of money and you're an idiot if you buy one.

The Gamecube was the last great Nintendo console. It had excellent games, from Mario, Pikmin, Zelda, Metroid, Wave Race, Star Wars Rouge Squadron, to the Resident Evil Remake, Star Fox Adventures, Eternal Darkness, F-Zero, etc, etc... That was a Nintendo console worth owning.... I really want Nintendo to succeed but I'm not going to buy their system until it it gets some good games, or at the very least announce some good games.

@The_Gaming_Baby Nintendo is currently standing on top of the success of the Wii, DS and 3DS, so I'm sure they have a lot of room for error. There's no chance of them going the way of Sega, at least not for a few more console generations (and that's if they fail miserably the entire way)

@The_Stifmeister Their controller is worse than the Wii U one and yet people are going to buy the PS4

@PlaWeird Pretty much this.

That Nintendo's selling ANY consoles without any software coming out isn't a bad sign.  Nintendo is going to do MUCH better come the holiday season, and it's foolish to think otherwise.

@MajinSquall

umm...

Maybe because we are consumers, and when a console is not doing well, we damn well want to make it heard to that company why we aren't buying, and what they can do to improve things.

I mean, really, you are on a video game news site, and wondering why people are getting so "caught up about a machine"??? Maybe its because that "machine" represents a large chunk of the market we participate in.

@TohouAsura I think we all would like his job.  He says shit that he knows isn't going to come to pass simply to keep his name in the media, and it works.

Hell, weathermen are envious of Pachter!

@karasill Just goes to show you it's a developers war and not a console war.

@Drkirk08 @The_Stifmeister And this is a bad thing?  Perhaps we've all forgotten how EA "supported" the Wii with shovelware and Boom Blox.  Honestly, I wish EA would stop developing games for any consoles.

@LtReviews @MajinSquall There's a difference, though.  People are acting really mean and vindictive on both sides.  It's possible to express displeasure without resorting to juvenile "Console Wars" crap.

MajinSquall
MajinSquall

@LtReviews @MajinSquall what i was trying to say is at the end of the day does it really matter if someone else is not playing the same console as you and that is what most of it is about they have a different opinion to others and they argue and it's not really anything worth arguing about

i admit i didn't word my post very well and also you said "you are on a video game news site" and that's my point GAME, the games are what's important not the system you play it on

i also understand that people want to know how companys are doing because if any of the 3 drop out it will be bad for all gamers but to ridicule and take the micky out of others just because they don't share your opinion is what i don't understand, so what if someone likes the Wii U or the PS3 or the 360 i say let them how does the fact that they like different console make your enjoyment of yours and your games any worse?

did i explain that right, i'm not very good at wording things you see

(i wasn't directing that at you personally by the way but to everyone)

At least it wont be 5 years out dated right from the release date.

mkeezay22

@The_Stifmeister @Infinity_Gauntl indeed if you buy the PS4 it is just buying a PC in a fancy case,at least with the Wii-u they are trying to make innovative games.A big problem is the marketing and the fact half of the casual gamers and parents who bought the first Wii don't even understand Wii-U is a new console not just a Wii add on or something.

If the adds showed more of the cool things that can be done with the system it would sell better,I admit the system is far underpowered compared to the PS4 or next Xbox but that doesn't mean great games can't be made for it,after all graphics don't make a game.

As for the Wii-Us controller I think if more people got to see what it's capable of they wouldn't talk so much shit
