User Rating: 9.3 | Mortal Kombat: Armageddon PS2
Mortal Kombat : Armageddon is the 4th Mortal Kombat game to be released on current gen consoles. It will also debut as the first MK game in the Next-Gen, on the Nintendo Wii. This game is jam packed with content as to please you for it being the final current gen Mortal Kombat. With that said, this game spans over 60 characters in total not counting a character that you could build form the ground up yourself. This aspect of the game is new to the genre, and was executed well. The customization is very deep, but they do get you pretty bad when you wish to add something to your character but you are out of “koins” and it costs about 1000. Other then the fact that they make you pay for items to equip your created kombatant with, it is very deep and robust. Greg K said that the fighting styles you can assign only makes your characters carbon copies of others only with a different look. This is false information. You are able to select what types of high punches your character has, low punches throws specials taunts, stances, weapon, weapon attacks, combo’s and finishing stances. It is a deep system with many colors to choose for your outfits, and attacks that you can string together.
Moving on to Konquest mode. This mode is a HUGE step up from Deception. This time Konquest mode is an action adventure game, a lot like Shaolin Monks. Although this game is lacking a jump button....... that’s just silly. A lack there of jumping aside, the Konquest mode is what truly shines in Armageddon. You play as Taven and are sent on a quest that I shall not spoil for anyone, and are sent through a story full of turns where you will meet many of the Mortal Kombat alumni. You will not know how it will play out, what will happen next, nor who is on your side, but in the end it is a satisfying quest. That goes without saying that the voice acting is still under par, but still a step up form Deceptions voice acting.... which was horrendous. If you wish to compare this to that... this games voice acting is amazing, but if you look at it realistically its just not believable or that great. Once you get past that and a troublesome camera at times, you will come to love Konquest, as it is one of the best parts of Armageddon hands down. The krypt has returned with many things to unlock. This time around there is only one type of coin, and it is just. “Koins” They scrapped the many different types from previous installments.... THANK YOU. The Krypt also holds no secrets this time around, You will know exactly what you are purchasing before you buy it, highlight a box and it will say something like “Reptile Alternate Costume” and poof if you want that hit X. Another new thing that has been introduced that has received much bad publicity, is the new Fatality system. This is actually not all that bad, it gives you more variety to creating new fatalities. If you miss old ones im sure you could preform the old fashioned Sub-zero spine rip... c’mon guys, punch in the gut then spine rip, there you go. The whole thing is to make your own fatality, people are looking at it as a string of pointlessness. NO. Learn what combinations do, then string them together to make something flashy and well.. Grotesque in the good ol’ MK fashion. I believe if you try a little harder you will learn to appreciate this new asset.
There has been virtually no upgrade form Deception pertaining to visuals and audio, although the game play has substantially upgraded I my opinion. Ever since Deadly Alliance the three fighting styles have made me feel like the game has slowed down a bit, and I was uncomfortable with that. Now the fighting styles have been reduced to 2, hand to hand and weapon. This makes for much better fighting in my opinion. Another new improvement is the air combat. This helps speed the game up a lot and creates a more exciting mood during a fight. String together a hand to hand combo, pop your opponent up then leap into the air to continue with an air combo, then land and unleash some attacks with your weapon. I feel much more at home with no 3rd style. I am grateful that they took it out.
The cast is huge, filled with every single Mortal Kombat character spanning from MK to this very single installment. Boosting the cast to 60 + fighters. They are all rendered nicely, I enjoyed seeing all the Mortal Kombat 4 characters now rendered in 3d.... well ,better 3d. You can take control of any character you wish, even Mokap, or Blaze.
A new gimmick, is The Motor Kombat, which is a Rip-Off of Mario Kart. The driving is not well done, the cars don’t handle too well, they feel like they are gliding away from you, the AI doesn’t put up much of a fight, and you are limited to only 1 power up per character. Not to mention that there are less then 10 characters to choose from for this mini-game. There are only a few tracks to choose from, and it is an over looked feature. They spent little time on it, and so should you. If you please you can take Motor Kombat online, with up to 8 people. As well as Regular Kombat online with some 1 on 1 action. This is where you can get your “Kreated Character” can become infamous.
All in all I believe MK:A is a worthy edition to the Mortal Kombat franchise. Despite what others may have said I lay down my opinion only as it is, my opinion. This game is not for everyone I will give it that much, but for those who are fans of the series I highly recommend this game to you for it is great, you will enjoy all of its features, well almost all of them. It is a Superb game and should not be over looked. If you are a fan of Mortal Kombat, for your own good please, go give this game a try.
