Asteroids rip-off that rocks.

User Rating: 8.8 | MineStorm VECX
It is a built-in game for the Vectrex system. It is a copy of the Asteroids game, but it still rocks.

If you don't have any other cartridges at least you can still play Mine Storm. This is what is so great about the Vectrex.

Basically it's four levels of mines. First level is just asteroid-type floaty things that move around slowly. When hit they break apart into smaller ones. Second level the mines are a different shape. But when they are hit they fire back at you. Third level the mines are another shape, like big X's. These are magnetized and are attracted to your ship. So you are constantly being chased. Four level mines are again another shape, that looks like a mixture of all three mines before it. This level mine also has the same attributes as the other levels all mixed into one. So they fire back at you and are magnetized. Somewhere in the middle of each level a small ship comes out to deposit more mines to hatch. The object is to hit him before he can lay more mines; unless you are trying to get top score. Then you would want him to lay as many mines as possible, then take him out before he bugs out. Then the levels after level 4 are basically a mixture of 2,3, & 4. Increasing in difficulty as the levels get higher.

If you haven't played Asteroids, you need to. Just to have a video game history lesson. The controls are the same. You have a fire, thrust, and hyperspace.

Graphics: Vector lines. Need I say more. No scrolling. Everything is on the screen. Yourself and the mines can travel off screen, but wrap around to the adjacent side.

Sound: Sound is sound. You get a "Jaws"-type theme playing while generic shots fired sounds.

It's very very basic compared to technology today. But it is still a fun game to play. It stands the test of time, as far as video games go.
