Half Life 2jg4xchamp

Half Life 2 sure is terrible. With its unskippable cutscenes, awful gameplay, linear level design, vehicle sections and half assed physics puzzles ever 15 min making the pacing a drab, awful enemy variety, terrible AI. I didnt even find it immersive at all. The only thing the game had going for it was the fact that it avoided the plagues of modern FPS design (except for extremely linear maps).

The story wasnt even good at all.

Half Life 2 was a good game. It's just not worth all the hyperbole surrounding it. I did like Episode 2 more.

>lolCritics. I prefer pooping on niche games that have a harcore/cult following. It's more entertaining that way.

No More Heroes - Blah, speaking of hollow. I wouldnt hesitate to call it all (geeky) flash over substance

Alpha Protocol - About 1/4th of the game is good, excellent even. Yet only that 1/4th is fapped on about by fans, ignoring other elements that actually count.

Godhand to some extent. Dont get me wrong, it's good and I'll defend its charm and how well designed the difficulty scaling is. But the cult following seems to stem from those who havent played it, just as a means to **** on IGN.

Planescape: Torments' - Yeah, so the writing is great. But really, such ending would usually have divided opinions if it the same thing happened in Film, or literature. I guess it's hip to say 'Planescape: Torment' in a best videogame story thread.

-

+SotC is beastmode. Other than the unhelpful map, the few gripes I have with it conclude with "let down by the aging PS2 hardware".

The Bioshock series has terrible gameplay and is only praised becaused the story is 3deep5u, excluding Infinite because I haven't played it but it looks the exact same story wise.

Anything Bioware. Appealing to bottom feeders.

Borderlands and Far Cry 3 have incredibely boring gameplay and only get praised because co-op is fun (not an accomplishment, even the worst of games has decent co-op w/ friends)

RDR is fine until it turns into Quality Family time!

RDR and Bioshock instantly leap to mind. Although RDR is still a good game... the shooting is lots of fun. Bioshock I would say is mediocre at best. The pacing near the end, after the huge plot twist, is just horrendous.

TWEWY
Vanquish
Kid Icarus Uprising
Demon's Souls/Dark Souls (in terms of difficulty, other than that DaS is GOAT)
Batman AA/AC

There are a couple others that I don't understand the amount of praise for, but can't think of them at the moment.

On pure feedback and impact and death animations? it's fantastic.

In terms of raw movement, the enemies themselves, and the part that it's full on automated? Yeah it's pretty uneventful overall in terms of gameplay. But the basic act of pressing the trigger, and watching/feeling destruction is pretty dope.

borderlands? more like borelands.

RDR is fun, but nothing special.

god of war is unbearably boring.

uncharted is just meh.

mirror's edge is the go-to book on why platformers are never in first person.

and i have yet to play anything from bioware that doesn't bore me to tears.

You're such a bitter little man Bruno lol

But I agree on RDR. The concept was good and the visuals were amazing. But the world felt so empty and dull a lot of the time and I got bored. The zombie DLC was fun though

Uncharted 3 is very overrated

MGS4 is overrated

GTA IV is overrated

I honestly think Bruno is quite optimistic and positive, especially compared to a cynic like me. With conversations frequently turning into "I find something new to hate on, Bruno defends it".

Last game we had a discussion about was the new Jagged Alliance game which I started raging a lot about after hearing about research, bases and cover systems.

Those are pretty much the only things I like about it. The blood, feedback, and dead eye.

I cannot believe for the life of me why they made the shooting so awful and repetitive though. It was one of the main reasons I quit the game, that boring rhythmic tapping of L1 and R1 after one another.

The first time I quit the game, I came back to it a few months later because I found this awesome user created cover art for it and because I thought I was just being whiny about it. Tried one mission, and it was the same complaint. Awful horse riding, and that boring, over-compensating lock-on TPS gunplay.

I know this isn't possible, but I might have enjoyed the game more at least if it had some sort of machine gun available to use just so it was more satisfying. The nauseating shooting might have been bearable then.

You take the thousand dreams write ups out of that game, and it has nothing worth a damn to offer. The combat system is pretty standard stuff for a JRPG, where as TWEWY actually has something unique to offer with its combat system, and it's frankly a deeper one as well. Plus TWEWYs tone ultimately stays the same, Lost Odyssey starts kind of sweet, and then gets into pure JRPG bullsh1t territory of oh look lets save the world from evil f*cking wizard guy nonsense. Overall that game is entertaining in its own right for its old school nature, but it's also old school to a fault.

Haven't played Xenoblade, want to. Bowser's Inside Story? In terms of writing? Sure it's pretty clever, the actual game? I'd still go with TWEWY here.

Well of course I did do that, but the dot reticle makes aiming f*cking impossible.

The best part I can say about the game is that the scenery is absolutely fantastic as is the atmosphere. Traveling across it is an absolute pain since they decided that some weirdass stamina bar was a good idea for horses even though the third best horse in the game can barely run for more than twenty seconds at a time.

Wish they had just copied OoT on that part.

That's because Rockstar.

In their attempt to create gritty, grounded, and uncompromising games in terms of atmosphere they tend to allow their games to do things that are just f*cking unsatisfying. Plus they give themselves way too much credit in the plot department. Their games are bloated with filler usually, and in Max Payne 3s case the plot was out right stupid.

Not gonna hate on them for LA Noire, they allegedly had no part in that borefest.

A Google search actually allowed me to enjoy RDR's plot a bit.

Didn't GTA4 have a fully functioning TPS mode though that was comparable with more pure TPS games?

GTA 4 was a shitty third person shooter. It was far more sluggish, slower, and stiffer than RDR was. Which alreadly is pretty stiff as it is. So no there was no version of GTA 4 where the shooting wasn't pretty lackluster(RDRs is much better by comparison), as much as that games saving grace was that in theory it's better than the gunplay in previous GTA games.

And as good as RDRs beginning and conclusion are the entire Mexico stretch of that game is filler. A grand chunk of the game either ignores the actual game of it or becomes pointless by the final stretch of the game. Same real issue with GTA 4.

Infinite is a 7.5 game at best.

Punch yourself in the dick.

On topic:

Half-Life 2. I will not say any other game is overrated on the sole merit that it is an incredibly mediocre shooter that has had the industry collectively sucking Valve's cock for the last ten years.

Though Halo 4 was pretty bad.

You are not missing out. Half Life pretty much popularized the bubonic plague of gaming.

While there are no QTEs in half life, setpieces exist. So do cutscenes, difference is, in Half Life they are all unskippable, and you can bop your head around and walk around in a locked room.

Half Life was a huge popularizer in cinematic gameplay which is the worst thing to happen gaming imo, the bubonic plague of gaming.

Are you saying that Half Life was not a huge part in popularizing cinematic gameplay? It wasnt just Half Life, nor was Half Life the first game with cinematic design or setpieces, but Half Life was one of the major contributors towards the shift towards cinematic gaming.

If this discussion keeps up it wont take long for it to turn into a HL bashing thread.

i think you're too quick to pin the "blame" (if there's anything to be blamed for to begin with) on a single game.

trends happen over time. you can't say that resi 4 and gears single handedly turned shooters into brown cover based crap, or that CoD is the game responsible for the "modern military surge" in games. there are a lot of factors, in and out of games, that affect the begin and end of those trends, it's more than "this game is praised let's make more of it".

I never said it was just half life.

It was multiple games, but Half Life is one of those that contributed the most.

I don't know, Half Life has a lot of faults, but criticizing it for popularizing cinematic gaming just feels wrong, since it at least strove towards some form of interactivity in its storytelling.

I don't think Half Life can be blamed for 'modern cinematic gaming' at all.

These I still enjoy, but I still wish to talk about

Metal Gear Solid 2 (my first MG game and the supremely convoluted plot did not help, MGS3 made me a fan though)

Perfect Dark Zero (not as awful as most PD fans say, but no way in hell is it worth 8-9 and it does show how downhill Rare went)

Super Mario Galaxy 2 (looking at it in more recent eyes as I probably said otherwise before, but the improvements and powerups make it feel more like an expansion pack, more so than a sequel)

Metroid: Other M (like PDZ, not as awful as fans say, but the flaws make me wonder about how it was praised by most others)

Zelda: Twilight Princess

borderlands? more like borelands.

RDR is fun, but deserves more than the score it got.

god of war is unbearably boring.

uncharted is pretty good.

mirror's edge is the go-to book on why platformers should always have insanely good visual design and be in first person.

and i have yet to play anything from bioware that doesn't bore me to tears.
