good to know we'll finally get some solid information rather than the endless speculation.. From what I understand, Project Scorpio is going to be made by the same engineering team that does the Surface line of PCs.. which is good news in terms of quality, but bad news in terms of a potential price point. Surface products are definitely "premium" and come with a hefty price tag..
The more I hear about the potential specs, the more i'm thinking they may be truly future-proofing the console and ensuring no compromises, even in the face of the eventual PS5 announcement.. which means that it may indeed come at a relatively high price today but the specs will still hold up in the face of Sony's next offering.. and by that time, price drops will put it back into striking distance for the more casual consumers..
Personally, I was hoping for a mic drop price of $399 at E3.. Realistically, I was wagering it would actually be priced at $499.. but with these rumored capabilities, Spencer's insistence that the Xbox One S is going to be their mass market console, and the potential need to future-proof against PS5, I can see them releasing a true no-compromise console at $599~ or more.. I guess we'll all find out soon enough..
I do know if they plan to release the console at $599 or more, they may need to avoid announcing that on the E3 stage.. it probably needs to be a quiet press release some time later in the month or even relatively close to the actual release date.. because even though the logic behind such a decision would be boldly made with a long-term outlook and made with the knowledge that the Xbox One S will still be on the market for $249 (or even less) plus XPA games will also exist on Windows 10 PCs with a unified install base regardless, the gaming media and fanboys alike will just scream it's DOA and that narrative will totally overshadow any positive news cycle they can garner from their E3 stage briefing.. they could showcase the most impressive games on the planet but it wouldn't matter in the face of "Scorpio is DOA" headlines.. and the last thing the Xbox division needs are negative headlines..
As much as Scorpio is going to be a great option for console fans who want the most out of a 4K TV setup, Microsoft is going to be walking a tight rope with the power versus price narrative.. if it's priced competitively at $399 but doesn't do native 4K/60fps in every game, it'll be "the Scorpio is half-assed just like the PS4 Pro".. if it's an absolute powerhouse that does everything they've said and more but it's priced above $399, it'll be "the Scorpio will never sell any meaningful number of units".. Even as a fan, i'm not sure how Microsoft is going to be able to effectively navigate that minefield but here's to hoping they figure it out.. Thursday is going to be an interesting day indeed..
