Lost Odyssey was as amazing as old FF games to me, so my best JRPG this generation by far

So, at least one has been made

Senor_Kami

An RPG made in Japan... You're right, it is a WRPG.

Gxgear

So is Magna Carta 2 a KRPG, it was made in Korea? Its about the style of the game more than what country its from.

Yup on Magna Carta 2.

Style is not only subjective, but also bears subtle differences from game to game on a spectrum. There is no way to draw a line in the middle based on style when so many games would have overlapping traits from both sides. Demon's Souls is one of them.

Again, W and J denotes their origin only.

This makes absolutely no sense. Genres aren't that subjective. FIFA and PES vary in styles, but the mechanics of both and the base origin make them both football games. It is absolutely undeniable that Demon's Souls is far more anchored in western RPGs than in Eastern. The origin of them is largely irrelevant when you are discussing two distinct genres like this and DS clearly falls within the WRPG genre.

Demon Souls plays like a WRPG far more than it does a JRPG...its very similiar to Diablo and other hack and slash games.

Except most hack and slash games are from Japanese developers.

Even yourself use the phrase "plays like".

Except the West invented them.

That might be true if WRPG was a genre in the first place.

The east also makes action RPGs, the west also makes turn based RPGs, and guess what? Those are already sub-genres, so how could a sub-genre be somehow within a sub-genre? Look at a gaming website with a sub-genre search, or even wikipedia it, WRPG/JRPG are not genres.

Also, you cannot go off of how they look because that does not factor into what makes a genre.

There's no reason for the terminology behind JRPG and WRPG if we base them on their countries of origina rather than gameplay style.

I think there is real use for these terms, but it has to be based on the gameplay, not the country. And what the country that developed them considers them to be.

Demon's Souls is considered to be an Action RPG in Japan. So there you go. Let's call it that.

Why do you think reviewers never categorize games as WRPGs or JRPGs? They're not sub-genres: it's not there to there to tell you what type of gameplay it has.

Well, tbh, it does seem like we call them JRPGs and WRPGs because WRPG fans get butthurt that anyone would call JRPGs "RPGs." Truthfully, I think the words are most useful as a baseline of communication between fans of Japnaese ****RPGs and Western ****RPGs for discussion, otherwise it devolves to "_ Japanese RPG isn't an RPG, doesn't do what an RPG should do, etc."

texasgoldrush:

Persona 5, the Tales games, the Paper Mario games, the Fire Emblem games, and maybe the Dragon Quest games are some series that have a lot of potential for continuing the tradition of good JRPGs on consoles. Resonance of Fate got good reviews and it's a JRPG, but I haven't tried it yet.

I thought Tales of Vesperia and Lost Odyssey were pretty good. Not as epic as the top tier PS2 and PS1 era jrpgs, but solid none the less.

Tales of Vesperia was good. I enjoyed Eternal Sonata and Enchanted Arms was playable with Japanese voiceovers. Didn't like Folklore(sp?) and FF13 sucked balls. Lost Odyessy was good and very under-rated. But every system is lacking on the JRPG front.

Liked the art style of Atelier Rorona that I just seen but I have no idea what type of game that is.

Folklore is an action/adventure game with RPG elements. I wouldn't classify it as an RPG. It is action/adventure.

Well, you have FFXIII,Persona 4,Lost Odyssey,Demon´s Souls(GS GOTY),RoF,Last Remnant, among some others and quite a few good ones on the handhelds(although I don´t know much about them). Most of them are good and some(like P4 or DS)are great.

Um Demon's Souls?

Fightingfan

Thats a WRPG made by Japanese people.

This is a thread complaining about there not being a "solid, innovative, and deep" JRPG. Someone points out just such a title and you want to discount it because you can't pigeon hole it into a narrow, self-depreciating stereotype? Jeez, talk about not being able to see the forest for the trees...

FFXIII, VC and Demon's souls were great. Reasonance of fate, Fragile dreams, Lost odyssey, ToV and Xenoblade are good. WKC, SO4 and eternal Sonata were above average well thats from what i tried and remember, and i'm sure there is more. (I'm talking about home consoles only here because handhelds got many great JRPGs)
