Will a good console JRPG ever be made again?

Pretty much given up hope of seeing something solid, innovative, and deep from Japan on the JRPG front. Played FF13, what a bore. Dialogue irritatingly stupid, plot slow, some pretty bad characters too.

What ever happened to the days of Xenogears-- beautiful writing, dialogue that made an emotional impact, characters that were likable, etc? Hell, I'll even take something like Legend of Dragoon. Anything out there? Anything on the horizon? I just wonder if the genre isn't on life support and soon will be dead if FF13 is anything to judge by.

valkyria chronicles was the last great jrpg i played. i'm sure eventually someone is gonna make another classic

There are quite a few great JRPGs on consoles this gen, theyre just stuck in Japan.

Tales of Graces and Xenoblade for example. Both great games IMO.

The game was never finished, let alone it was constantly lost in translation. I think people give a little too much credit to Xenogears tbh and Legend of the Dragoon was flawed to death.

Just recently played FF XIII (no matter the hate it gets), Star Ocean: TLH,Resonance of Fate, Valkyrie Chronices, etc.

Edit: Oh and I forgot Persona 3 and 4 as well

You forgot an unfinished 2nd disc in which the narrative completely falls apart and a broken battle system. The 1st disc was good, but that game gets the "nostalgia goggles" treatment almost as much as Shenmue...

Try Resonance of Fate. Very unique battle system that does take time to get the hang of though. Three completely different charcaters that make an interesting team. Each has an interesting backstory. Story takes time to develop but before that we get to learn about the chracters and how they interact and what their relationships are like.

The second disc of Xenogears was rushed, but it didn't at all detract from the mind-bogglingly complex plot, the amazing characters, or the great dialogue. Not to mention the masterful soundtrack.

I will never forget Elly telling Fei to "LIVE!" throughout all their encarnations, destroying Solaris as Id, hell even the intro movie. Or dozens of other instances in that game.

Demon's Souls, don't make me laugh. I own that, but if you are telling me it compares with Xenogears then I have obviously asked the wrong audience. LOL

I thought it was great stuff. Battle system was incredible and in-depth, characters were different from the usual archetypes, their backstories actually had me kind of giving a damn instead of just being like "Oh, so I guess they DIDN'T just spring from nowhere...", story paced in such a way so that I didn't just stop caring halfway in and actually wanted it to go on, basically the exact opposite of Final Fantasy XIII.

Atlus delivered some of the best JRPGs on the PS2 last generation, though they've been very lacking this current generation, Japanese developers for the most part are too small to develop mutliplatform titles to help their international markets, too small to program for the PS3, and too anti-western to make games for the Xbox 360, so easily they'll engaged with the Wii, and the DS and PSP, probably justified by having a much larger userbase... but again, their lack of multiplatforms I think really hurts them on the international market, most Western publishers these days publish for multiple platforms, it really helps their games get more recognition

Did everyone just skip over my post? I basically said the same thing. But ya, get it. Some of the characters that you come into contact with are interesting and there are some good comedy moments.

I enjoyed Star Ocean the Last Hope. I never beat it but i plan on getting it for the PS3. It feels more natural to me.

Super Robot Taisen a3, Super Robot Taisen Z, Super Robot taisen A, D, and OGG. Are the BEST turned based JRPG games I have ever played. To me, I could careless about Fire emblem when it comes to these games.

See the problem is your using whats "good" to you TC. I personally thought FF13 was great. If you dont like it then oh well. Keep looking for something you like.

Xenoblade is out in Japan for the Wii and The Last Story is coming.

If you think Xenogears is the last great JRPG, then I can only assume you haven't played one for the past decade.

I have both games too. It's just opinions, but critics agree with me and not you. Looks like I get the last laugh.

Super Robot Taisen a3, Super Robot Taisen Z, Super Robot taisen A, D, and OGG. Are the BEST turned based JRPG games I have ever played. To me, I could careless about Fire emblem when it comes to these games.

Tales of Vesperia is pretty good. And I thought Final fantasy XIII was fine.

Lost Odyssey was as amazing as old FF games to me, so my best JRPG this generation by far

I still hold that FFXIII was a good game, but at the same time I definitely feel that there is an absence of great JRPGs that truly excel. Maybe my tastes (and my ears) are preventing me from seeing the genious that is the Persona series, but unfortunately I'm just not interested in the games.

You should play the Shin Megami Tensei series. No bad dialogue and no freakin' 1 hour long cinemas. Plus the games are hard and require some strategic thinking unlike all of Square-Enix RPGs post FF12. FF13 has the lamest gameplay/challenge in a RPG.

Lost Odyssey was an amazing game I would rank with the PS1 FF games, Mistwalker will have Last Story out soon and that looks like a day one purchase. I really enjoyed Eternal Sonata too and think it gets over looked, I have heard great things about ToV but I am ashamed to admit I haven't played it yet :cry: I will get around to it :P.

well if they would put godamn VC2 on PS3 instead of the stupid PSP then everything would be fine and dandy but noooooo.

I really want to play VC2....
