@kvally: Yeah that's how it was back then. You pretty much went to friends houses to play the systems you didn't have. I never had the 5200 or the Colecovision. I did get Turbo graphix 16 before I went to college was hooked on the game military madness for a while.

I feel sorry for these kids that missed the arcade era.

I played my first game as a kid on an unknown to me device that had me stick a football field grid onto a TV screen... We're talking 1980 maybe 81. Soon thereafter I started gaming on the Atari 2600 where I had around 40 cartridges... Many given to me by the older kids who "grew out of them" (quitters!)

My fondest memories are playing Yars revenge, jungle hunt, sequest, combat, Pac-Man and pitfall. Great times indeed.

1982 with both the Atari 2600 and Intellivision.

I was also given a pong machine the same year, but it isn't really a console considering pong was all it could play.

Started on a Sega Master System, playing games like Alex Kidd and Wonder Boy. Can't remember the year... probably early 90s.

Most of the arcades i went to were dark, seedy and sometimes a bit dangerous.

1987 on the C64. Fun fact: I did not know about Nintendo until 1997, completely missed the NES and SNES. No internet, different times. So I never played the original Mario games or Zelda games until like ten years ago.

I also missed arcades because they weren't a big deal around where I lived.

Despite missing out on most of the best things gaming had to offer in my youth, I absolutely loved games.

Can't pinpoint the exact year, maybe 1995-6, first game was 'putt-putt goes to the moon' which apparently came out in 1993 but I'm pretty sure I didn't play it then.

I got into gaming more seriously around 2000 with Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2 and Command & Conquer: Red Alert

This is a tricky one because I'd been exposed to some games that my cousins owned before I ever really had my own game system.

But technically, my first game system was NES and I would have gotten that in 1989 (that was my first year of primary/elementary school).

The first game I had was Super Mario Bros. (which of course had Duck Hunt included on the cart). And what can I say? It was a brilliant first experience as a console owner.

I can confidently credit the NES and Super Mario Bros. for directing me towards moving into software development/product management as a career path. :-)

And damn Indz, you started gaming in 05 and joined the forums in 06? Just seems so odd. Somehow I feel fortunate to have gamed for years before seeing the inherent negativity of gaming forums lol.

Yup, joined gamespot ( gamefaqs ) after just getting into gaming :)

my brother had a Atari 5200 from my memory, I only recall playing Star Wars on it

but I'd say that the classic NES is where I really got my start, with games like Super Mario Bros, Duck Hunt, Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Excitebike, Commandos, Contra, Rygar, Castlevania, Ghost & Goblins, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, Kid Icarus, Bionic Commando, Wrecking Crew, Duck Tales, Goonies II, those I remember having, though I also rented a ton of games I wouldn't know where to begin

my godsisters/godparents I use to spend a lot of time on too had Super Mario 2 & 3, Ice Hockey, and Track & Field, which I played a lot at their place

Started gaming in the mid 80s, but got my first console in 88/89 not exactly sure. It was a Sega master System, and played such classics as Aztec Adventure, Teddy Boy, Ghost House, Black Belt among many others. I still to this day think gaming at it's best was when you could play games on Sega consoles, to me Sega made the best games ever.

First gaming memory I have is of Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt on a 13" screen. Had to have been around '91. First system I ever owned was the Game Gear. Played the mess out of Aren: Maze of Death, Space Harrier, Sonic, and Smash TV. I had other games but those really stick out in my memory. I still frequently romp through the SNES version of Smash till this day lol

So many good gaming memories. Bad thing is though when I was about 13 I traded in all of my Game Gear stuff at a local game store for a Ps1 import DBZ game. What an idiot lol

It was a NES, early ninties, don't remember the year. I was really young. No more than six, probably.

Super Mario Bros. 3.

The first console I ever owned was a N64 that was bundled with Star Wars: Episode 1 Racer. The first game I ever bought personally was Pokemon Blue. I also bought a GameBoy Pocket to go with it.
