Poll Whic is a better investment: $400 AMD R9 290 vs $400 PS4? (117 votes)

AMD R9 290 - Biggest game library, 1080P/60FPS, 1600P, 4K gaming + Steam for free 57%
PS4 - PS4 Exclusives, Some 1080P games, 900P/720P gaming + PSN for yearly fee 43%

On the eve, of PS4's launch, I think this would be an appropriate question. Since both pieces of hardware are priced the same. But one is vastly superior in hardware wise. Would you make the tradeoff?

AMD R9 290:

Specs:

VS

PS4:

Specs:

Note the R9 290 is 2.66 times more powerful. The R9 290 GPU is almost 5X more powerful than PS4's GPU.

Not, only that it doesn't struggle to run games with Ghost's at 1080P. The R9 290 will blow through Ghost at 1080P at constant 60+FPS not only that it could even push Ghost at 4K graphics. It's not only easily pushing 60 FPS + in 1080P in AAA titles but it's easily pushing 45+ FPS in 1600P in games like Crysis 3, Far Cry 3, Tomb Raider (with TressFX enabled), Metro: Last Night. Not only the PS4 not have the games mentioned it will choke trying to run Crysis 3, Far Cry 3, Tomb Raider with TressFX and Metro Last Night at 1080P. It could barely push BF4 at 900P something that the R9 290 can do at 1080P without breaking a sweat. And did I mention it can do 4K gaming.

The only advantage the PS4 that I could think of is that it has exclusives.

But over the next 5-6 years the R9 290 will still be pushing close to 1080P in certain games whereas the PS4 will likely dwindle down to 720P. Think about BF5 or BF6, which hardware will run better in the upcoming years.

Not to mention the R9 290 comes bundled with a free copy of BF4. PS4 doesn't come bundled with ANY games. And I didn't even go into 75% off of Steam Sales. I doubt the PSN will gave AAA games 75% off.

So, if you were to make a $400 investment which one would you choose?

You know PS4 has a company backing it that will produce tons of exclusive games right, and for the next 7 or 8 years at that. PS4 will have exclusives plus all the good to high profile PC games that get released over the next several years as well.

Not a fan of the R9 290. Wait for the 20nm GPUs those will blow consoles out of the water.

PS4 by far. Don't think I'd ever pay $400 for a video card.

you still need more than just a $400 card to play games and all those PC exclusives like Path on Exile run even on a PS2 level of hardware. XD

depends on your situation but if you are just comparing the two i'd say PS4. But if you are in the market for an upgrade to your GPU then yeah go with the 290 obviously.

which in turn means the 290 will also be relevant as well. Mantle says hi. Even without something like Mantle the 8800gt still smokes the PS360 7 years later.

Desktop PCs are becoming less and less common. And just having a PC with PCIe slots does not mean you can just stick a R9 290 in it

If you've got a desktop PC or small form factor PC that will fit one of those bad boys, that's obviously the way to go.

Assuming you (Mr Xtasy) met all the requirements, power, ventilation, PCIE 3.0 x16 slot - etc, I'd be grabbing that Radeon today, and enjoying better graphics on a wealth of games you already own - today.

Those PS4 exclusives, yeah they're appealling. But If they are really the only reason to get the console, I'd even look at borrowing one from a mate down the track. Save yourself a bunch of bones, still play the exclusives.

That's what I'd be doing. I would stretch the legs on that R9 290 every god damned day. Balls to the wall. Pixels pixels pixels. I'd even consider the R9 290X in order to enjoy AMD's hardware audio.

Yes, if you are just doing a GPU upgrade to a capable PC, then get the 290 or 290x or 780 (whatever you prefer). And play all those current/next gen games. Then then you can save money for the PS4 (or X1 if you prefer) if something shows up on the console that interests you, and it will probably be cheaper by then

you'd be surprised. Also a lot of general purpose desktops are not big enough to throw a monster GPU in there. Then there are power requirements as well.

So yeah it depends on your situation. For some the 290 makes sense (honestly you could go cheaper and still have great performance especially considering how weak next gen consoles are) for others the PS4 makes more sense. Me I already have a PC with a 7950 so I'm good. I'd pick a PS4 over a 290 easy. But for those still running 6xxx GPUs ore nvidia 5xx or even 4xx GPUs then yeah the 290x is the better choice. Then you have the consolites who don't have gaming rigs or a computer that can house one of these. To them its even more of a no brainer. PS4 all the way. So basically unless you are in the market for an upgrade the PS4 is the better option. I'm Master Race all the way but I'm also honest and I'd never lie to someone and say they should go out an spend $400 on a GPU when they don't have everything else that you need to go with it.

Now if your question was creating a budget PC to match the PS4 instead of buying a PS4 i'd say build the budget PC. 500-700 is enough to build a PC from scratch that will best the PS4 (you don't need a 290 to do this) and at that price point It starts to make more sense.

PS4 easily. That card or an equivalent one will be half the price in a couple years. The PS4 will probably be the same price.

I get the point you are trying to make but an optical drive is in no way shape or form mandatory for a PC in 2013. My PC doesn't have one and I have never needed to use one other than when I installed the OS and I used my external optical drive for that.

If it's pushing 4K graphics now, in couple of years say 4 years, what makes you think that it will not be able to do 1080P?

Personally, I may go for the R 290 if I was forced at gunpoint now.

I'm fine with the PS3/PC/VITA setup for now. Plus, I prefer DAI on the PC.

I need more info on The Order, ND and other Santa Monica projects tho.

I can actually wait for a better gpu (price/performance) close to DAI launch.

Let me break down my point...

7 years from now there will be gaming experiences only possible with a PS4, simply due to exclusivity.

7 years from now there will not be any gaming experiences that are only possible with an R9 290, simply due to the fact that there are a plethora of other graphics cards to choose from.

Perhaps my point was too simplistic.

Non reference R9 290 for me(or X version, waiting to see)

When a better cooler is on that thing expect even more performance. For me however the dark horse which really made me decide to go with radeon again is mantel. Its gonna be alot more FPS for free and Nvidia fanboys gonna cryyyyyyy from the rape Amd has in line for them after nvida drones realize how much money they spent on overpriced crap, not even the 780ti is gonna beat a mantel supported game.

15+ dice games are already confirmed for mantel, along with Theif/Star Citizen(biggest hermit game)/Murdered souls/ and whatever games from the new nitros oxide engine.

This lineup includes titanfall, cows be sad..

Assassins Creed black flag/Watchdogs/Titanfall/Witcher 3/Murdered Soul Suspect/Battlefield 4/Heroes of the storm/The Division/ Thief/Need for speed rivals/Project Cars/Project Spark/Dark Souls/The Jungle/ Star Citizen/ Wolfenstein/ The Evil within/ Dying Light/CastleVania/South Park stick of truth/Arma 3/The witness/The Crew/Sims 4/ Mad Max/Mirrors Edge/Battlefront/Batman Arkham Origins

This guy runs a 3 core AMD CPU, with enough power to push a DX11 low end GPU, but no where near enough for a 290.

This guy also preaches AMD everywhere he goes.

you don't need a 400 dollar graphics card.. are you mad ? you can get a good enough graphics card for 200 dollars and have 200 dollars to spare.. you could get a 3DS and expand your library or a Vita or if you have a good enough PC already get a PS4.. but expanding your library/ choices >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> better graphics

Been here a long enough time, this guy trolls the PC board and SW boards occasionally, and even let slip his HW config in his sig before the site change.

Unless he magically has a intel CPU or AMD FX 8 core, 290 is a bad purchase for such a underpowered PC.

Balance is the key to success.

This, of course, presumes you have a relatively modern desktop PC, with 8GB of RAM installed, a non-slim form factor case, with a great power supply (see the ones shipping with Dell Inspirons, for example? A mere 300 watts).

I would go so far as to say, that chances are... if you have such a setup, and the accompanying ~24" inch PC monitor, you probably are already a PC gamer in the first place and have an adequate graphics card anyway.

Reality is, these days, more and more people are using laptops, tablets and slim-form factor desktops for their general computing.

You need a Core i5 minimum or AMD FX 8 core to handle such a GPU really.

Wait, an this gfx card access steam and play all these games at 1080 without a CPU or RAM or a MB or a disc drive ......... Wow, this must be working so well for you

LMAO. Obviously you will need to put it into a desktop PC. That's just as stupid as saying you wouldn't need a "TV" to play your PS4.
